Jumping and climbing

I have checked the forums several times, a couple of members have asked but have not gotten clear answers on jumping and climbing. How exactly do you get your merc to jump and climb?

i'm not a real experienced player but i've climbed a tower and got on a roof. for the tower i just got near the ladder and then clicked the top of the ladder/inside the tower and the merc climbed. then just clicked the ground for him to climb down. i DID NOT do this while restricted by action points, it was after a battle. and, as long as there is a box next to the building, climb up on it and from there the roof top (single story). you can't always use the obvious means like stairs and it seems you can't climb every tower you see, only some.

i've climbed on a roof during battle as the bad guys are sometimes up there and i don't happen to have a grenade. never climbed a tower (or even tried) during battle but it seems in order to climb at all, you have to climb all the way to the top and that might take more action points than you'll ever have. have you even tried it? i'll try it next time i'm in a battle with a tower nearby. be a great vantage point for picking off the bad guys (maybe that's why it's not allowed)
