been watching this game for a long time

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

Fist Week? Sounds nasty! Or perhaps the title of a...*cough*...German adult production [X(]

I think word of mouth will see steady sales after the initial rush. I've talked to many many people who are not wargamers but have an interest in WW2 and when I showed them screenshots and explained that the game will encompass the entire conflict with all the strategic decision making as well as the operational stuff, they were quite keen. I don't think this should be underestimated. For people who are not familiar with wargaming, the grander the scope, the easier it is to understand.

The board game is plenty playable. When this is released, it will be too.

It depends as much on the player as the game.

For instance, I find the RTS games unplayable - but there are hundreds of thousands sold. They make no sense to me, just a bunch of scrurrying around trying to plug holes in a dike with no purpose behind the simulation. FPS are only marginally better and of no interest to me. By comparison, I found Space Invaders and Missile Command more entertaining, since they weren't trying to purport to be anything more than what they were.

If you like strategy games, WIF is excellent. If you also like hex based war games, then it is even better. But if your answer to both is no, then MWIF might not be your cup of tea.

I like detailed wargames, but from what I have seen on this forum I have some concern that this title is in danger of bogging down in complexity to the point that most will not find it an enjoyable experience. I'll reserve judgement until after it is released and some people get their hands on it.

Perhaps. But the original decision to put this on a computer was to remain true to the board game. The board game is complex - no two ways about it.

Complex yes in a simple way. Similiar to chess, you can play as a beginner or a master and always have a challenge. No matter how much you play it the game varies infinitly. Results are different and tactics change. A new frontier every time.

ahhh but the kicker with WiF is you won't quite discover just how complex it is until the middle of the game when you have a large war machine at your command. You've learned all the rules and fought some battles...the obvious ones pretty much dictated by history. Now YOU are in command....your orders, sir? The weather is looking quite possibly stormy this time of year, there isn't quite enough oil to go around, and enemy forces have been unexpectedly reported strong in this location and unexpectedly weak in that location. What are we going to do? That's when the game gets really good.

Fortunately for new players of the game a huge ton of work has been put into answering questions about how the game works and how to play it. I can predict right now though that anyone who complains about the complexity of either process will be the same person that can't be bothered to spend time reading the instructions. But really it is not that altogether difficult if you have ever played many other hex-based, I-Go-You-Go turn-based wargames. In fact I think it will be even easier to learn the game on the computer, which will help a great deal by enforcing the rules correctly the first time, instead of figuring out several turns in to a game that you had been doing something wrong, something that would have such a critical impact on game play that you might need to start over.

And ironically, once you do master the rules and game-play, you will most likely begin to see how lots of things in the game are abstracted/simplified in the interests of playing the game, and you can move on up to a new hobby ... arguing about how to best simulate WWII.
