In-Game Managerial Tactics

Post by KG Erwin »

After playing out hundreds of games, I've developed a style which I try to tailor my teams towards.

On offense, I look for good contact, good speed, good eyes. Power is of secondary importance. Just get on base, and we'll find a way to drive you in.

In pitching, good stuff and good control. Velocity generates strikeouts, but if you walk too many it negates the Ks.

On defense, the keys are range and arm. Hands, not so much. You can get over a few errors if you can get the double-plays and throw out runners at the plate.

Defensive plays -- I seldom use anything other than an occasional pitch around or infield in. Intentional walks -- never.

Offensive plays -- sac bunts and hit & runs are de rigeur. Calling for a steal is a tricky thing. Unless the baserunner is a Jackie Robinson or a Rickey Henderson, stealing third is "once in a blue moon". Stealing home? Fuhgeddaboudit.

After all this, I sometimes just play a hunch. Baseball tactics is a mix of playing the percentages and trusting your instincts. PS recreates this very well, in my opinion.

How about it, guys? What's your tactical philosophy?

KG,
As we have discussed before, I sim or watch games. I try my best to find the best player I can to fill out my roster. If I get slow power hitters I will play station to station looking for the big home run innings. If my players have speed, I'll try to run your pants off and hit and run. I do want good defense and try to build a strong pitching staff. If I end up with a Go Go Sox type team, I try to make the best of what I have. So lets say that I roll with the tides.

Kg ...

I'm also very high on defense and pitching ... With lead off of Ty Cobb, Ricky Henderson Mode ... Follow up with Hornsby or George Brett ... then the middle line-up (if lucky)-Babe, Gehrig or Pujol then lastly ... have good contacts with speed again: Suzuki or George Sisler to end the line-up ... then pitchers that has great staying power of old ... pick them with the first starter in the likeness of Koufax, W. Johnson and having a closer like - Radatz or #58 Jonathan Papelbon ... there's is the dreamteam line-up I tried to emulate with a star defense from catcher thru SS, 2B and rested out in Centerfield ... That's how I managed my team ... with most of the utilities players must good defense ...

My players usually lead the league in stolen bases. I've never seen an empty 2nd base that I don't like. Hit and Run is my best friend. I've had great success with 2 out getting a runner from 1st to 3rd this way, often picking up an extra run. On defense Pitch Out is used all the time. No one is allowed to steal a base on me. If you succeed in doing so you get a big target on your head and I would hit you with a pitch if I was allowed to.
