Japanese Pilot Pool

Post by tocaff »

I know this has been covered many times, but:

What do you do to maintain a Japanese Pilot Pool? I'm looking for different ways to deal with this problem as nobody wants to be 6 months into the war and getting greenies.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

The best way I have found is to turn off auto replacements for "ALL" your air units then pick which groups you want to recieve them.
If you just leave the default setting your pilots are going everywhere, even the garrisons in Manchakuo

This will help a little but eventually you will run dry...it is inevitable. :(

I have also tried offering cash , cases of sake and all the Sushi one could eat to Vichy French, Indian, S.E. Asian and various pissed off Colonial pilots. So far it is not working very well at all.

Rather than worry about the pilot pool you should educate your squadrons on beating the snot out of some undefended base for a while and turn that frown upside down by making men out of the boys!!

I had a Wirraway squad that lost all of its eight planes every three days. Surprisingly, the moral didn't drop. Propably because there always was no one left to tell the tale [;)]

So if you train like crazy beating the hell out of a base that you have isolated that's it?  I've tried using China, but it's easy to run into the AVG.

AS the Japanese, you MUST turn off replacements for everyone (use the god button on the LB air screen and again for the afloat air screen); otherwise most of your naval replacements end up on float planes. I have found that I still have a few navy pilots left in March and the JAAF pilots will last until at least June if you are careful and starve the rear area garrisons of replacements.

As the Americans I have found that it doesn't matter much what you do, you always have enough unless you fight serious attrition battles with your carriers and PBYs; then you may run out of Navy pilots.

And where exactly did you find the good pilots for that unit of Tonys?

My honored opponent wants to know how I ambushed his P-40Bs one day and Spits & Hurricanes the next in Burma.  That's easy, I have some squadrons with those high experienced pre-war trained pilots who haven't seen heavy combat yet and now they have moved to Tonys.  BANZAI!  Sadly the attrition will deplete these formations also and quickly I'm afraid.

just let 1-2 island bases around legapsi (south philipines) in the hands of the anglo-american aggressors[:D], build up the AF at legapsi and the base north of it (cant remember name yet) and train up your fighter pilots there. this way, you can get your FG experience above 60 very fast and send them to the front.

in my game against my crazy aussie opponent garry in the end of 1942, all my tony units (production rate is above 300/month) have a avg. XP of 70. crack pilots in planes with armor and self sealing fuel tanks and 20mm cannons? it IS possible for the japanese.[;)]

i know..i know. thats not realistic (thats why it will be impossible to train up fighter pilots this way in AE), but so is 10 IJN pilots/month replacement rate.

i like the AE solution here when it works:

several pools and sending your fighter aces acelerates the training speed of the greenhorns.

Too bad this didn't make the cut for release, for I was looking forward to it as well.
