NKVD

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

NKVD

Post by ool »

The NKVD, apart from getting the best of all equipment and supplies, had a noted effect of "stiffening" the regular troops resolve to stand and fight. A neck shot to the back of the head really gets peoples attention and inspires them, Russian style. Will there be any bonus to a hex if there are NKVD troops defending there as part of the units?[X(]

I always thought the NKVD units would have been politicaly motivated like Black shirts = low morale , they were not true fighting units as such.

From the NKVD Wiki:

"During World War II, NKVD units were used for rear area security, including stopping desertion. In liberated territory the NKVD and (later) NKGB carried out mass arrests, deportations, and executions. The targets included both collaborators with Germany and non-Communist resistance movements such as the Polish Armia Krajowa..."

This is another thing already built in. A NKVD regiment fights like a division, how much more can you ask for?

First I've heard of this. Seems strange. However when you are dealing with political fanatics anything is possible, on any side of the conflict. The stand and fight to the death mind set of the average is well documented throughout the history of the Russian front. Germans underestimated their love of the motherland.

ridiculous,

no matter how politically indoctrinated those units were it all boils down to training and efficiency.  NKVD had no more advantage than any other soviet manufactured unit post invasion.  I have yet to encounter any scientific nor objectional piece of evidence that places those units above the regular soviet units in terms of combat efficiency.  By far and away the best books on this are from Niklas Zetterling and Anders frankson.  they cover both the campaign in Normandy and the battle of kursk.  They are the " Freakonimics" of the analysisi of the war in the east.
