Allied AI and Bombing Strategies - Hard Sarge

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

Allied AI and Bombing Strategies - Hard Sarge

Post by anthonykevinluke »

Morning all,

Sarge, I have been a quiet lurker here since the re-birth of these Talonsoft classics, played them for a long time and was often chatting with Jean Claude Larrusso with his mods; so I suppose I have been around awhile :) I am looking forward to playing them again but was wondering about the allied AI. I gave up playing regularly a few years ago because it was way to easy as an Axis player to win the game in early 1944. The AI sent it's raids too deep too early and got carved up in short order. B17 and B24 seemed too easy to kill, and the escorts and sweeps not very effective. How do you rate these issues now? For your consideration.

Regards,

Tony

Hi Tony

that was a good forum, way back when, it is a shame it had to die off, all of that good info on game play lost

interesting question

not sure of the answer though

Harley had done some stuff to slow down the pace, the big boys shouldn't be trying to fly every day, no matter what, I am still not too happy with the Meds, they want to fly deep at times (on the list) (which really isn't a issue, once the IXth gets built up, but can lose alot of planes early when they are not)

but, sweeps are deadly, if they get into the right place, escorts work, but would like to see the AI use them better (on the list)

Fighter bombers fight back, will pick fights now, so Tiffies and Mossies are not just targets

oddly, the last 3 days, I been working on beefing the Axis AI up

yes, the Off player makes his turn, and sends it on, then the defender plays out the turn, there is a review feature, but can be HARD to tell what is going on (sweeps don't give info on airfield attacks) but it can give you alot of info

the best part, Harley has reworked the saves, so they are now about 680 Kb big, compared to 15 mgs

Hard & Harly;

In my own campaign, version 6, it is 8 Jun '44. The Allies are ashore, and the Axis are moving towards the beachhead.

I had 2x Mosquito squadrons night bomb the 17 PZGD around the Le Mans/Tours area. This is a same spot the Lehr Panzer started the game.
A flight of Mossies would hit the center, and the messages would read, bombs falling in 17 PZGD,
A flight or Mossies would be slightly off, and the messages would read, bombs falling in Lehr PZ.

Currently the Lehr Pz is in the LeHavre area of France.

I havn't had a chance to run any tests to see if damage is actually being done to the Lehr PZ. I hope it is just a message mix-up.

I know you gents are close to being done, but I thought you might want to know.

Forgot to add the second item ...

On D-Day, the first airfield in France captured was assigned to the IX FC, now a few days later it is assigned to the 83rd Cmd.

I thought I had read elsewhere this had been fixed.

yea, Gary had code in there, that if the airfield didn't have aircraft on it, once it opened up (which could be easy to miss (early game, AI made the moves, after patches the player made the moves)) it would then go though some die rolls to give it to another command, Gary and I, spent along time reworking this set up

(which in itself was kind of funny, being on the phone with Gary, and he reading me code, and then asking how I wanted the code changed, which basicly, in the end, I was able to get the A. fields to stay A. and the B. fields to stay B. )

but, that said, as in most cases, the AI still will have the power to do what it wants, when it wants, so if the AI thinks it needs something, it will override the code

HS;

About the other problem,

Here is the info. Ver: 1.06 Date: 9 Jun '44. 2x Night Mossies bombing at 32.5k+ altitude. Tgt: 2 SS Pz. Loc: two pips SE of Tours. When the Mossies stray "slightly" the message is bombs falling on Lehr PZ. On 8 Jun, the Lehr Pz had moved from LeHavre to the second defense line, middle of Normandy front.

The day before it was the 17 SS PzGD, two pips north of Le Mans. I have been bombing the Lehr heavily and often, so I don't know about whether this is causing any damages.

The Lehr must be leaving its paw prints in one of the data bases.

I have not noticed this with any of the heavy night bomb squadrons, or the Mossie FB night strafing attacks.
Obivously, the day units seem to be fine.
