Boy that ship being towed sure looks like is missing some pieces. And are they hoses on the deck? Not a good day in Mudville!

Mogami towed home after surviving collision with Mikuma near Midway and subsequent american airstrikes?
(Note: Although the bow looks damaged in oposite direction as after ramming portside of Mogami at approx 45deg).

I agree this looks like Mogami following her collision with Mikuma.  Going by the contents of Mogami's TROM, I suspect the oiler ahead of her is Nichei Maru.

It is possible the negative got flipped. Happened all the time

Hoses? Wait! Japanese ships had damage control?[;)]

I think Mogami for sure and whoever is towing has her engines pressed yet remarkably little exhaust. That chief would seem to know his business.

To me the damage looks consistent with Mogami striking the port side of Mikuma, as was the case.  I don't think the picture has been reversed.  You can see the prominent derrick that is to be found on the port deck aft of many if not all of the big tankers impressed for use as 'merchant oilers', and it is in the correct position for a photograph that has not been reversed.  That's why I suggested this was Nichei Maru, and I think she is engaged in refuelling Mogami rather than towing her.  Why would Mogami need a tow anyway?  Is there any reason to suppose that the collision left her incapable of proceeding under her own power?

Mogami, it is[:)]

Nichiei Maru, it is[:)]

.............

While the image source is no help it is almost ashuardely Mogami and the Nichiei, as noted above the TROMS and Mogamis condation both point to it being non other.

From Nichiei's TROM:

7 June 1942:
NICHIEI MARU refuels collision-damaged MOGAMI using the stern-to-bow technique.
