Time of Writhe - Axis

Post by Chocolino »

This is a ToW V1.5 PBEM for two players.

The game is unmodded and all setting are default.

I have been given the dubious honor to advance the prospects of the Reich and their allies while Gary Gardner will play the rest of the world.

Visibility is one hex only which will result in some surprises (I am afraid) and control over neutrals is given to the player who holds influence of more than 50%, otherwise the country remains under AI control. (exceptions are Italy, US)

The Polish have not learned from the Czeck who have more or less contributed their lands without resistance for the greater benefit of the Reich. Instead the Polish have openly refused the most basic and well founded demands of opening a corridor to the German owned Koenigsberg pocket. We must teach them a lesson.

Luckily we can trust in Chamberlain's reaction. The most explosive thing that he will send over the channel in response will be some well crafted words of protest. And there is not really anybody else of significance to worry about - or is there?

(Note: Sorry for the slight delay in providing updates. But the extra time has been well used well to upgrade to V1.50A)

We have suffered the loss of a capital ship in the North Sea before we could recover her into safe harbor. She started the game too far south to do it in one turn and the ghastly British jumped at the opportunity and sunk her on the last nautical miles before reaching Kiel.

At least the land campaign in Poland is going well so far. Polish resistance is tougher than expected (no surprise given their excellent leadership) but German spirits are high nonetheless and we look forward to bring a benign rule to the Polish people (and use those extra PPs to further the cause of the Reich).

So far everything goes more or less according to plan. The UK and France appear peacefully awaiting further German moves and have given up on Poland as far as we can see. We suffered over proportional aircraft losses in the early days of the Polish campaign. But the reckless use of air power has been checked and our heavy friend, the leader of the Luftwaffe, had to curb his enthusiasm for punishing and eliminating weakened Polish units. (But we did send him a new extra shiny dress uniform to make up for it). Air Power will be used from now on only in critical situations for ground support.

The invasion in Denmark struggles since we have underestimated unit requirements. Now we rush new units in but have to live with a delay. It seems insignificant now but will have an effect in the long run I am sure. At least in Poland things are going more or less as planned.

The treacherous Soviet Union has invaded Finland in a surprise move. Their initial losses were high but they successfully penetrated our border defenses. We contacted German diplomats for help but it does not look as if we are going to join the Axis at this point in time. We will have to face the Soviets ourselves.

The campaign in Poland comes down to the final battle around Warsaw. We have started already last turn to tax the railway system to the limit and bring units back west. The Danish campaign still suffers form poor planing. We hope that the units held back there for longer than anticipated will not be needed elsewhere too much.

The losses dealt to and by France shown below are aerial only. There have been no French land attacks that we have noticed.

Finland is overwhelmed by the Red Army at its border. The Finish air force has been eliminated and the government has sent out a plea for help to all countries that are concerned about Soviet aggression including the Western Allies. (Though we hear that both Soviet and Western Allies employ the same military adviser in Gary Gardner and that concerns us greatly).

The Polish campaign comes to an end with the fall of Warsaw but the German leadership chides the local operational command for its impatience and for using again too many Luftwaffe ground support missions.

The delayed Danish campaign can finally proceed as planned (well, except for the timing that is)and we prepare for further operations in the West. Especially our aircraft are needed urgently as we find ourselves under constant aerial attack by the Phoney-war-French.

Miracles do happen. The Finish plea for help was heard universally and a total of around 100PP was contributed to the Finish cause by Western democracies. We would like to mention the significant sacrifies this must have entailed for some countries that are currently waging a war (ill advised as it is of course) on their own. We promised the Western Powers that we will put the resources to good use against Soviet Imperialism. However, diplomatic channels tell us that military adviser G. Gardner was quite outraged by the transfer of funds and that he has lobbied against the aid vehemently - albeit unsuccessfully).

At a recent meeting in Berchtesgaden the heavy leader of the German Luftwaffe was quite embarrassed to admit that British bombing raids on German cities not only have occurred but that our air defense could not even engage the attackers at all so far.(Observers report that the poor mans face was as red as his recently acquired boots). Technology experts recommended to increase artillery research and introduce better AA guns.

(Player note: Previous RtV experience was not always applicable in playing ToW. The new game is quite different (which is good of course). As a result I have been caught on the wrong foot a few times so far - my fault. In the most recent example I did not expect the UK to start the game with strategic bombers just because they didn't in RtV. I detected the air raids more coincidently in the reports now. As the British never suffered any losses to their bombers despite German aircraft being present in quite some strength, the high level loss report looked as if we were not engaged at all with the UK. I hope that the lack of British bomber losses is just bad luck. Otherwise I will be quite vulnerable to heavy PP losses)

Total international aid to Finland is now 130 PP. That is quite a sum and we hope it helps to significantly delay the Soviets.

We honor the MR Pact with the Soviets - for the time being. At the moment we don't want to be distracted by any events in the East.

We implement a harsh policy of occupation in Poland to reap the full economic benefits - we have to live up to our reputation after all. Being only moderately cruel will win us no international favors either. (The full consequences of these choices are not yet fully understood in the German leadership and we will let history surprise us).

Finland is bracing itself for amphibious attacks from the Baltic. Our brave sailors gave their lives to try to thwart the invasion but the Red Army troop transport(s) remain at sea undamaged.

The low countries did not make any concessions and constantly sided politically with our enemies so we had no choice and took matters in our own hands. They will make a profitable German protectorate.

The foreign aid received by Finland two weeks ago made a huge difference. We will of course loose this campaign eventually but we can hold on quite a bit longer and force the Soviets to suffer higher losses than we thought possible. The Axis watches the Soviet campaign in neutral Finland with quite some interest.

Our progress in the Low Countries is steady, steadily slow that is. The combined Western Allies resistance is tough but we are still confident that we can handle the current level. A breakthrough through the French lines in the Ardennes near Luxemburg could not be achieved so far. Defenders were dislodged and pushed back but the line is holding. (Well - our plan is not exactly brand new or especially unique either and will not pose any surprises for the enemy). But it is still a good plan and we challenge the Western Allies to prevent it.

The Finish "military intelligence" (an oxymoron ?) is very confused. Where are those Russian landing craft? There are no other active wars being fought by the USSR in the region. Did Stalin not risk the attack or are the transports still idling in the Baltic and waiting for reinforcements - or did they take a pleasure cruise after all?
