715 parachute faught in Italy and all the way to Berlin?
I know this is a European theatre question but it is still WWII. I met this one old timer and he had a whole lot of stories. From what I understand, his unit would help out other units that were not advancing. And he was in the Battle of the Bulge! Can someone please tell me what unit he was in?

I do not bemieve the U.S.Army had the luxury of any unit being held as a permanent "fire brigade", and the number "715" is NOT a parachute infantry number for that army..

Could be the 507th Parachute Regiment? This outfit joined the 82nd Airborne Division for Overlord (replacing the 504th, which got chewed up in Italy), took part in the counterattack in the Ardennes in after Christmas 1944, and dropped at Wesel, Germany, in late March 1945. But it didn't go anywhere near Berlin.

Hi Przemico231. Its interesting to hear how the war was in Poland. Would you say that Nazis treated Pols better than the USSR?
RE: 715 parachute faught in Italy and all the way to Berlin?
...Or the 517th PIR. Here's a link: http://517prct.org/documents/13th_airbo ... e_book.htm . The 517th saw significant combat before being assigned to the 13th Airborne Division. The 13th Airborne never saw combat as a unit. It was the Theater Reserve in the ETO. ("his unit would help out other units that were not advancing"???)

Hmmm i would not call slaughtering around 40.000 civilians in the duration of the weekend a better treatment i think the Nazis treated Poles nearly the same as Russians... maybe Polish POW's were treated a beat better but probably only becouse they were not so numerous...
See for yourself how capital of Poland looked like in 1945 to see the link you need MapGuide® 6 Viewer TM installed
here is the link http://mapa1945.um.warszawa.pl/init.html
be sure that Plan 1939 option is not checked.

The Germans used Poland as a kind of testing ground for the things they would later do in Russia. They did not treat the Poles kindly in any way.

I saw a cite the other day that estimated as many as 20% of the pre war population of Poland died by the end of WW2. Incredible, horrible.

when thinking about all the Polish jews the Nazis killed in Poland alone I can´t think about being any better than the Russian. Guess the total death caused by the German were higher than those from the Russian but Przemcio may know better. Not saying the Russian were anywhere nice to the Polish.

footslogger,
Have a look here http://www.517prct.org/documents/short_ ... istory.htm
I cant see any unit numbered 715 in the US Army in Italy or fighting at The Bulge, closest was 715 Infantry Division of the Wermacht.
Be real careful of the memories of an 80+ year old, great for background but often found wanting on detail.

Well the Russians killed many Poles but you can't compare that to the thing Germans did... Russians were more eager to deport people to Kazachstan (my family experienced this) or Siberia. While most of the Officers/Inteligents/Policemen/Political activists were either shoot or deported to Siberia to work in the Gulag (like my great grandfather).

Well... Let's not forget the Soviet massacre of Polish officer POWs at Katyn Forest.

Yes but not only officers were shoot but also profesors , doctors policemen , political activists as my greatgrandfather landed in Brest-Litowsk fortress in 1939 as soon as KPZB showed up in Bialystok area
he was saved by the fact that he had signs of work on his hands and NKWD officer making selection for the ones going to katyn and other camps gave him only 25 years of hard labor in Gulag.
