game playable yet?

Post by panzers »

bought the game when it first came out and thought it was awful for anyone who never played it. Was the general consensus. Has it improved enough to where I can see how it plays yet? always wanted to learn how to play the boardgame but never got a chance. When I bought this game I was very disappointed in how poorly it was done. Is it time to try again with all the patches? Please let me know.

No give it another couple of months and check back again, the next batch of patches are going to be smaller but more often according to Marshall, the game is getting better but it's not 100% yet

see the playable yet II thread... as Matrix shut the first down.....  It is better, but not a really good product yet.  I would consider it finally up to Beta release status though, and progreess is being made.

It's a fairly buggy Napoleonic wargame... Empires in Arms it is not.

I've owned it since it came out and never had any show stoppers running it vs. the ai (except for the ai itself which has gotten better).

Now if only the AI could react to a situation like modern day chess computers AI react.[:'(]

If Attacker does A,B,OR C = then Defender does A,B,OR C in responce calculated in % sliding scale effectivness.[8D]

I have noticed the AI france reacting much better.. Its much harder to best them with just the Prussian army now..

But it is still a little gullable and easily tricked in other ways..  Most major powers if you reach thier main provinces will run back to the capitol giving you a break (even if you only got there with 1 guy...

The Russian and English on land still have several issues though.. the English will keep landing 1 militia at a time in holland on its transport rather than load up a heavy fleet with a full corps or 2..  The Russian will sit in St Pete and watch Moscow get sacked..

So I usually play one of those to keep from having to watch (and suffer the temptation of taking advantage of the russian)

I think new games starting with 1.06 are fully playable, although that version is still in "final beta" phase.

Older games aren't nearly as reliable, as some of them have "leftovers" from previous bugs.
At LAST! The greatest campaign board game of all time is finally available for the PC. Can my old heart stand the strain?

I am all for the playable rating but in some cases it depends on who you play for the value of the game...  If you are Turkey.. Russia will declare on you and attack with what ever starting forces are there.. but then no more, the rest will stay in St Pete for the rest of the game or be used to naval assault the german minors later but will not move toward you.  Neither will Spain or England, just Austria from there on out (unless you go picking fights).  Where as if you are Austria its a free for all, as Turkey might hit you and so might Spain - France is an almost definite just never know when etc..

As far as bugs go though most are gone, the rest are mostly minor and do not STOP the game but can make you create work arounds such as dropping garrisons in certain territories or walking around an allies territory if the access glitches etc...

I still enjoy playing and think it is VERY playable especially for beginners!!!!!

I think new games starting with 1.06 are fully playable, although that version is still in "final beta" phase.

With the French I Corps issue and other fixes in v1.06, the pbem game should be OK now. There are still a few more fixes planned for the next v1.07 patch:
- 0000543: [PBEM Bug] Setting skip turn causes game malfunction (marshall) - resolved.
- 0000149: [PBEM Enhancement] Would like a host editor to adjust PPs etc for PBEM game (marshall) - resolved.
- 0000473: [PBEM Bug] 'Skip once' phase checkboxes not being cleared (marshall) - closed.

Other than combining some phases as has been proposed, the pbem game should soon be fine. What else might be needed for v1.07 regarding pbem??

As you point out, some improvements in PBEM game speed are required (combined eco-dip phases, sim dip phases, and maybe an autoforage option). Also on the top of the list is the security issue on which good progress appears to be being made for 1.07. Some graphics to track corps movement and reveal battle results, so the game is not so much a test of ones memory would look good and make the game less intimidating.

However, with the fixes already in 1.06 and 1.07 the game appears almost ready on the bug front (although we need some play testing to confirm this). If the above changes were made, I would energetically encourage people to get back into the game.

Other items such as chits for naval battles, trival battles, proportional ship type/nationality losses, less file transfers, and the ability to retreat inside cities before combat as per the original EIA rules would be very nice, but not entirely necessary.

I have done much of the coding for an arrow AAR mode (Arrows showing unit movement) but there are a few other things that needed to be done before that (PBEM security). I'm not sure if the AAR mode will make 1.07 yet??? Will keep you posted.
