Request to support higher resolution than 1024 x 768

Post by Peter Fisla »

Hi guys,

my laptop LCDs are 1920 x 1200 and WitP AE is at 1024x768. I'm playing in windowed more and the window is so small considering how big the new WitP AE map is. Is there any plans to support higher resolutions ? I wouldn't care if the all the screens wouldn't align properly but we seriously need larger window for the new AE map. How about 1600x1200 support? or say 720p (1060 x 1000).

Thanks!

We investigated doing different resolutions, but the game engine really wouldn't handle it very well.  All the graphics are tuned to 1024X768 and we might need to produce an entirely new set of graphics if we went with a different resolution.

Try reducing the resolution on your laptop before starting the game.  I usually use around 1280X960 or 1152X864.  The makes the window fill most of the screen, but not all of it.

I would not suggest new graphics. The toolbar could stay the way it is now...simply just add some black area to fill the rest of the screen. The large map is the key...if AE is meant to be the future of WitP perhaps it's worth to consider in the future. I have been playing WitP since it came out and will be still playing many more years to come as doubt somebody else will make something like WitP again.

To keep it simple - let's just say that anything is possible - but after looking at it - we determined that it would take far more time to implement more resolutions that we were willing to spend. Priorities.

If/when we do a totally new game (WITP_II?) we will of course try to build in the ability to more easily switch resolutions - but I doubt we will do this for AE.

I see so that means there is just too much code to change to support different resolutions, rather spend it on polishing other areas...I understand

Exactly ... every screen ... every piece of text ... redone ... too much work ... more than you imagine!

And I'm assuming that you couldn't keep the windows in the same positions...the buttons the texts etc...they wouldn't be in the center of the screen (and I could care less about that) but only expand the map to say 1600 x 1200; if you know what I mean. only support one extra resolution through command line.

Everything is tracked at the pixel level ... so "same position" would make the screens too tiny. They would have to be at the same "relative" position ... which translates to a redo.

it's kind of silly to be limited like this. heck if you stretch it out (at least witp) the game log keeps on scrolling, but the graphics just won't go there to that extended area

but on the plus side, with a large desktop, you can have the game running and have important things around your screen that you have to keep an eye on.

If you ever do a WITP II then I'd like to see multiple monitor support and multiple window support. However, having poked around AE a few hours I think this one will do quite nicely for the foreseeable future. :-)
