Sound Conflict

Post by madgamer2 »

The first time I ran WitP with all the sounds and music it was just to much for ny old brain. The sound effects alone are a total distraction when trying to watch a turn resolution. And the music when trying to do my turn gives me a headache.
Must be a younger generation thing but I play without all that sound distracting stuff...total silence with perhaps the TV on is all. Do most of you really find all those sound effects and music help in making the game more real, more immersion?

Think the novelty has'nt rubbed off yet but I know what you mean, but I run all my games with the PC sound setting turned down. Only ramp it up when listening to music or sport commentary etc.

For all games I have the music off. ALL games.

For most wargames I have the sound off.

WitP- AE and Close Combat are the only wargames when I have the sound on.

In WitP - AE, the sounds add to immersion. But, sometimes, a sound can provide a bit of info that was not obvious in the video replay.

Rather than a generational thing, it might be, at least partially, a brain wiring thing.  About 10 years ago a study found that introverts get more brain stimulation for each external environment stimulation than extraverts.  Since extraverts get less stimulation per event, they might seek out more stimulation if there isn't enough going on.  Introverts can sometimes get overwhelmed passively sitting there, so they will take actions to try and do things to reduce stimulation.

I always shut off music with games and most of the time I either turn the volume on sounds way down, or completely off.  My SO also hates games making sounds and will usually ask me to shut off the sound if the game is just making minor sounds.  My computer downstairs has such terrible speakers I turn the speakers off most of the time anyway.  They tend to buzz because the cable is poorly shielded and I'm getting inductance from the power supply.
