How great is your hex visibility range/FOW?

Post by JFalk68 »

I'm just curious what everyone else plays at? :)

I have my set at a range of 3 hexes. I would prefer though that even at 3 hexes I couldn't see the Polish units in the wood hexes, they should be hidden ;)

I play at one hex visibility. Recon become hugely important at that setting.

2 hexes, this gives you info for units approx 50 km away, reasonable distance for field recce.

I set mine at 3, and it seems the most reasonable.

Units have a zone of control in this game of 1 hex, this represents a presence in strength in this hexes at least enough strength to pacify the countryside (gain control of hexes), I will assume that they then from this ZOC send out recon patrols.  So two units three hexes away would be sending recon patrols into the same hex, so they should be sited by each other to my thinking.  It would be better if at range 3 you got just a blank counter of the appropriate colour (so you see a red counter knowing its russians in the hex but no indication of strength or type) then at range 2 you get the info.. but it works as it is!  I have tried range 2 and it just seems unrealistic that units would get that close and not know about the other.

At the scale of the map Corp sized formations this seems very reasonable that at 150km apart their patrols would be skirmishing, for Division level units this seems a bit much.  I honestly think Divisional formations should probably not project ZoC at this scale.. but it still works well even with them doing so.
