Man Am I Getting Hammered

Post by sanch »

Playing GC Allies vs AI; first go.

My old WITP strategy was to attrit Japanese air - turn Java into an unsinkable super-CV, etc. But this game won't let me do this. I simply don't have enough fighters.

It's 12/29/41, and PM is already getting pounded. And I have not a single fighter in the entirety of Oz. Not even one. I have absolutely nothing to send against the air attacks on PM. What a disgusting turn of events.

I could pull fighters from Singapore, but that isn't a great option. I do have fighters in SE Asia, but I know I'll need them there (assuming Burma falls). PI is still alive, but I can't pull the fighters from there - restricted forever, etc. My groups at Pearl are at 1/4 or 1/3 strength thanks to the KB. And by the time I get some from the USA, PM will be long gone.

I think there's a lesson here: Next time, on my first turn, you better believe there will be air assets headed out from the US to Oz.

BTW - kudos to the AI guys - they did a great job here - the buzzards!

There are 4 x B-17 squadrons, 4 x B-26 squadrons and 4 x P-39 squadrons in the west coast that start out assigned to an HQ that is subordinate to the Southwest Pacific command (one of the B-17 squadrons has a fragment at Pearl, get it rebased to the West Coast to re-merge it before shipping). Get them loaded and shipped to OZ ASAP, they'll be your main airforce for the defense of Port Moresby if you can get them to Townsville and other bases in time.

I haven't looked at the West Coast land units closely yet, but I'm sure there is an air HQ or two you'll want to ship as well. OZ has some baseforce units, but not nearly enough to operate 12 squadrons efficiently from just one or two bases. You'll need some more air support if you want to keep your bombers in action when Japan comes calling.
