need help (user specific problem)

Post by pompack »

I am getting highly annoying "freezes" in the orders phase (only). When performing any selection operation (including but not limited to select base, select TF, select "transfer" or even clicking on the map) there is sometimes a freeze of up to 30 seconds. During this freeze the curser will still move in response to the mouse, but neither the commanded action or any subsequect command given during the freeze occurs. Once the freeze releases it seems that most if not all of the mouse commands given during the freeze are performed (i.e. the screen goes crazy).

The frequency of the freeze is no more than once every five minutes or so.
It has never occured during the combat phase either during heavy computional activities nor (significantly) when using the mouse to click the combat message displays off.

I typically run with the " -dual" switch and processor affinity set to processor 0. However I have tried all four combinations of switch and affinity/no affinity and it does not affect the freezes.

Note that this did not occur prior to loading the hotfix. Also note that it has not occured when running any other application.

I have been waiting for someone to post this issue; since no one did I have come to the conclusion it is something unique to my configuration.

Does anyone have any ideas? As I say, it is highly annoying and quite disruptive to the level of reasoned thought required to survive in this game [:)]

try renaming your SOUND folder to NOSOUND and see if the freeze ups continue. I am wondering if the click sound is not working well with the codexs you have installed.

Here it is, at lest I hope it is. I think I did it right

Can't say that it means much to me, but hopefully someone can tell me where the little devil is hiding.

Sorry to say, I don't see any I recognize as problem codexs. Maybe someone else can find one.

For what it's worth

I have been using Nomad's "noSOUND" fix with no problems.

HOWEVER after v1083c I discovered that I could go back to "SOUND" with no problems, so something the the beta patch fixed whatever was bothering my system.

I did not see anything out of the ordinary. Have you installed the latest audio drivers?

Ok WOW thanks Nomad I just tried this and it fixed all my problems with bombardment animations freezing up. The animations were super fast! Can you take a look at my diax and offer any recommendations as well? [&o]

Again, I don't see any that I know to cause problems. What is a problem is that often times you might have an old codex installed and a newer one would fix it. I will try to find some more help tonight. You might try setting the HW acceleration slightly less than full on your audio card( really your on board sound hardware ).

Well, here is what I was looking for. This is the link for a codec reset utility. Make sure you set a system restore point before you run this. I know it is safe because I have used it before. What it will do is get rid of all of your codecs and install the default XP ones. That should fix your problem. You may need to reinstall some of the codecs later, but the program that has to have them will tell you and you can reinstall it.
