Worth It?

Post by Woderick »

For a long while WiTP has been collecting a little dust on my shelf.

I really want to get into WiTP but haven't made the time.

I can get the $20 discount, however, I'm choking on the $80+ cost (I want the manual/boxed edition).

Question: Has AE improved WiTP enough for someone who is ready to get serious about playing the game to spend the cash?

Thanks!

Times are hard, so I'm really not going to bang the fanboy drum too hard. But Admiral's Edition is everything I'd hoped for and a lot more. I couldn't justify getting the box and manual (and regret that a bit now) but the price of the download version was a no-brainer decision for me even before playing the game. The improvements are that radical, even prior to the first full patch, that I think this will be my last game purchase for a fair while. I don't PBEM either - the AI improvements are genuine accomplishments.

Might it be worth your while installing WitP again and playing through a few turns just to check whether you want a game with even more complexity on top of WitP? (It will also help ease you back into the swing of things should you choose to buy AE ;) ). It is a reasonable amount of money and how you square that depends on what you think a fair price for what you'll get out of the game will be.

How about another answer. WITP is a great game but a very hard one. I have been playing it (exclusively PBEM) since the day it came out. AE is at least twice over as hard.

Make sure you are comfortable with the magnitude of WITP before you double down with AE.

What was it about WITP that turned you off? Maybe by giving us some idea of why you couldn't get into it we can help you figure out if AE will be more to your liking.

Admirals Edition, to me anyways, is ideal. The game is slower paced than WiTP, and is thus more realistic. It requires more effort on your part, but...not THAT much more once you get over the initial learning curve. Additionally, some things in AE take less time than in WiTP...such as automated convoys and sub patrols.

There is a few things that bother me...at times I wonder why a few units or ship types were placed in the game, since they seem to have no purpose (like restricted air groups that withdraw in January). But beyond those pesky things, I've yet to find one "big annoyance" with Admirals Edtion. Nor have I found anything that I "desperately wished for" in the game, either.

I'll never play WiTP again...AE is just too good.

I'm really enjoying it. Part of the fun for me is trying to figure out what the h#ll is going on. And I played Witp since the release in 2004.

Don't think I will go back to WITP with AE now. Much improved play and many witp issues address as well as the increased size of units and map and historical accuracy. Those annoyances I find very minor such as restricted commands that withdraw. You just leave them alone and send them away when needed. Not much effort but if the japs come a calling on the west coast (what?) then they will have to deal with those units. Just keeps them in check to reality. [:D]
