Bernie vs. Goblin Continuous Report

Post by Goblin »

OK,

Just purchased my stuff and sent him the files. I choose a Half Moon setting, with clear weather, but let the visibility be randomly determined. Ouch! Visibility (if you can call it that) is 3!
Gonna be knives and bayonets.:mad: Helps me more than Bernie, I think (I hope).;) :p

STEEEERIKE ONE!

Post by Goblin »

Well,

My files arrived, but Bernie could see my units! Good of him to tell me that!:D I pressed enter when the password screen came up, and I guess I shouldn't have. Do we have to have the same password? Different? With the sight range at three, I had purchased an Airborne Battalion (3 Companies), and a Ranger Battalion (6 Companies). I don't think I purchased any armor.

Would have been a heck of a battle... With that vis range I opted for mostly MC's, airborne and some engineers.

New files are in your inbox. Pretty much the same setup but I made the vis 11. Even used the same map. :)

Oh where are you Mr. Goblin? Come out, come out wherever you are! My little pussycats want to, heheh, play...

Nice little opening bombardment from your 150mm's, but did you really think I'd have my troops so close to the VH's? True, a lucky hit did take out a couple scouts, but I see Mr. Neblewerfer played "knock-knock" on the hatch of one of your M10's...my condolences to the families of the crew!

Should be an interesting battle as I have quite a few surprises for you. :)

Opening moves

Post by Goblin »

We had a little skirmish in a villa, center map, between a bazooka team, a scout patrol, and a German M/C unit.

Opening bombardments were not hugely effective. Bernie, thought you might reverse think me and put someone on the front line! I did install a new sunroof in one of his scout cars, with my 155mm saw. My M10 survived, but the crew had to break into their spare shorts!

It should be noted that rockets with unlimited ammo really bite if you are on the recieving end:eek: :) ;) !

The next turn is when this should really heat up. I'm coming for you Bernie McGuyver. That sound so hollow when the person saying it has vehicles with an 'M' in front of them, and the person threatened has vehicles with a 'PzKpfw' in front of them! ;)

Now, now! You said I couldn't invite Mr. Wurfrahmen to our little party, but you never said anything about Mr. Nebelwerfer! ;)

Turn 2

Post by Bernie »

Well, it seems Mr. Goblin had a trick or two up his sleeve as well. :)

We'd agreed on no strike elements, but transports full of paratroops aren't quite strike elements, are they?

Fortunately, I seem to have misplaced a few Flakveir's and those nice boys in the C-47's found them for me. :)

I'll have to thank them if they ever come back again...at least the ones that made it home. ;)

It also seems that my opponent has a fondness for M10 Wolverine's, as well as 57mm ATG's, much to the dismay of a couple of my scout vehicle crews. :( Not to worry though, the advantage to buying cheap, fast units is you get an awful lot of them! :):)

He also seems to have a thing for 60mm mortars...seems such a shame they mark their positions so well when they fire. Why, someone could spot those smoke plumes and target a battery or two of artillery on them!:eek:

Ok, a coupla more minor shootouts with M/C troops, and I ventilated a coupla more A/C's. Those rockets pounded a platoon into mush.:( :mad: SP guns leave a smoke signature too Bernie, Catch some 155mm baseballs with your Hummels! Bernie covered his onboard stuff with smoke rounds, making them difficult to spot, but I had already targeted some of them. C47's? I cannot confirm or deny the use of C47's in this battle.;)

Baseballs? Hummels? I have no idea what you're talking about. ;) BTW, ever hear of the concept of "shoot & scoot"? What's the sense of having a "mobile" force if you don't move it? :)

Well, we had some more minor clashes. My A/C's are doing a wonderful job probing his lines and finding places for my artillery to land. True, I've lost a few, and some MC units have been pinned and retreated, but that just readies things for my reserve artillery. Yes...reserve artillery. You didn't think I'd let all my arty be subject to counter battery fire, did you? Besides, I needed a little CB myself. :)

BTW, what ever happened to those paratroops you tried to use? They make it home okay? Let's see, I think I counted 5 C47's, at two sticks per plane that's ten squads of troops I shouldn't have to worry about. A rather sizable percentage of your force, no? Perhaps now would be a good time to use that F9 key? Especially since my forces have captured all but four of the VH's...

Hmm... Do paratroops that don't get dropped have to walk into battle from the rear areas then? You'll forgive me then but I just can't resist... "Vee haff veys to make you valk!" :D

Paratroops? We cannot confirm or deny the use of airborne forces in this theatre of operations.;) As for arty, yeah, I'm way outgunned. Thats ok, my troops are so tough, they use pencils for toothpicks. Now if I could get any of them to do anything...:mad:

I did get a good salvo from a 155 battery, just northeast of that villa, in the valley. Lots of German wounded screaming. Blasted a halftrack on my left flank (north map edge), but just minor firefights here and there.

Ah Goblin...what the prophet you are! Do you use tea leaves or a crystal ball? In your last email you told me things were "heating up", and 'lo and behold, your infantry discovered my flame tanks! My, my, my! Were they as surprised as they seemed? You could ask the survivors... Opps! Silly me! There were no survivors! :D

Still not too late to use that F9 key. There's no dishonor in surrendering when you are hopelessly overmatched. Indeed, it's the honorable thing to do. Avoid the needless casualties...surrender while you can. :)

Heating Up

Post by Goblin »

Our northern flank (my left, his right) is a mass of burning trees, Airborne, and (now) Flammepanzers. They burn nice. Still a hot zone. The southern area is starting to be hit by Bernies mechanized infantry. In close and personal. I likey. The center is fairly wide open, and has been quiet. A little TOO quiet. Hmmm.

My condolences to the flame tank crews families, plus another halftrack needs a paint job, and some bondo.;) :D

Serious note-my impression thus far is that Bernie is a dangerous opponent and is not to be taken lightly. I rank him up their with Mogami. Don't be taken in by his seeming good nature!;)

F9? Is that some weird German dish that your POW's will require? They are gonna get hot dogs and apple pie.:cool:

Speaking of German dishes... I hope you enjoyed the crispy fried 57mm ATG as much as my crew enjoyed preparing it for you. :)

Hot dogs and apple pie? You serve German food? You are aware that hot dogs, also called frankfuters, were invented in Germany and are named for the city of Frankfurt, aren't you? And apple pie, another German dish, made famous in the USA by the German settlers in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania Dutch are actually German)? How nice of you to provide POW's with the comforts of home. It seems such a shame that you're not getting any takers. Then again, those FJ troops always were quite dedicated and heroic.

Serious side: While Goblin may be a little cautious in his advance, he does use good tactics and has put together a nicely balanced force. Anyone thinking of playing against him in the future should be aware that he has a good grasp of the concepts of sight lines, field of fire and layered defense. Of course, it's not going to help him a bit against my troops, but it's good to have an opponent who doesn't just blindly throw armor at everything. :)

Prior to my turn comment

Post by Goblin »

Bernie,

A little cautious in my attack?!? I can't move any of my troops! They appear to love their deep holes more than moving into the open. Go figure. Its raining 15cm rockets, 21cm rockets, 150mm gun rds, and 81mm mortar rnds, not to mention a few 60mm mortar rnds and 155mm gun rnds that land WAY short! I would have rolled over you like a tidal wave by now, except for the weather,;)

You mean your guys didn't call in those artillery strikes on their own positions, in a vain attempt to hit my troops which were surrounding them? Oh my, and I thought they were being so heroic.

Please let your arty crews know however, I've recommended them for the Iron Cross. The medals should be arriving momentarily...attached to 150mm "delivery mechanisims". :)

Shame and eternal shame, nothing but shame!
Let us die in honour: once more back again;
And he that will not follow Goblin now,
Let him go hence, and with his cap in hand,
Like a base pander, hold the chamber-door
Whilst by a slave, no gentler than my dog,
His fairest daughter is contaminated

ROFLMAO!!! This is great stuff I think I'll turn it into a musical:eek:

The battle is Goblin's glory!
The fighting hole his throne;
For ages bright in story,
This PBEM is his own.
In war the first, the fearless
His standard leads the brave,
In peace he reigns so peerless,
The bravest of the brave!

The battle is Bernie's splendour!
His wealth the mighty Nebelwerfer;
He is the Reich's defender;
Giving Goblin's troops the what fer;
His gallant sons in story
Stand bravest of the brave,
Oh! Bernie's strength and glory
Are on his rockets by the wave!

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!
