Singapore

Post by sfbaytf »

I've started a new Historical Campaign game vs the AI. I'm the allieds. I've decided to try a different strategy for the Malay Peninsula. I'm sending all my high quality units to Singapore and using the rest as delaying forces. I'm putting special emphasis on sending back the AA and arty via rail to Singapore.

I plan on using PP's and sacking the CO and replacing him with a more competent leader.

The initial entrenchment level is low and I'm hoping that by moving the AA units there from other areas will somewhat negate the expected air bombardment. Singapore seems fairly well supplied and I don't plan on stripping it like Java and sending fuel and supplies to other areas. Unlike real life I don't have to worry about a water shortage.

What's the longest you've held Singapore?

Jan 26 1942...[:(]

This was made by sending all combat units to Johore Bahru and digging in there. Rest of units were sent to Singapore and dug in there. Sent few convoys with supply from Palembang to top up Singer to 70k. Didn't help much...base fell with over 50k intact...[:@]

I tried to pile up all units in Palembang too, had over 200 AV there with lvl 3 fort. And was brushed aside with something like 4-1 attack on first day of AI landing...[:@]

I am trying the same thing. I am marching everything to Singapore and Johore Bahru. I have turned off all expansion besides fort building. I am still in mid December so I don't know if this plan is going to work or not. Japanese bombers are bombing up and down the Malay road network and doing a lot of damage to my marching units. So my plan may end up failing.

Still holding on Feb 1 1942.

I assumed from the get go that Singapore is a lost cause, so my intention was to cause maximum casualties with the forces at hand.

I immediately evacuated every unit back into Singapore & set the combat units to rest & set the engineers to building fortifications. I replaced Percival. I also cranked up the supply demand for Singapore to its maximum level. This sucked all of the available supplies out of the Malay peninsula into Singapore. By the time the AI showed up, the fortification level was up to 4. Every 2nd or 3rd turn the AI would launch a shock attack which would knock two levels of the fortifications. However, due to the fortification bug, I would always build the 2 levels back at the end of the turn [:D].

Now that the fortification bug has been fixed, I suspect that Singapore will fall much sooner.

Singapore seems to supply itself with some 70-90k supplies. I', playing Japan vs. Allied AI and it still holds it. It has 1800AV with fort 9! Dunno how to break through. Bringing in 5 Divisions from China theater now. Hope that will do it. Fortress singapore is a much harder nut to crack than in vanilla but even then I like it. It was my own stupidity that brought me into this situation. Some leaders are already sent home to take responsibility for their failure. [:D]

I've begun to send all AUS and NZ aircraft squadrons back from Malay and parts of the DEI back to OZ. I figure they will be more useful there.

Since I'm playing with a patched version, I won't get the benefit of the fortification bug. I just hope I can get the fortification level up before the main assault comes.

The air raids are a pain and I think putting units into strategic mode and moving them via rails makes them more vulnerable to air attacks.

Aside from the possible delay and causing more casualties, I don't see too much strategic value in my strategy unless I could hold Singapore, which seems highly unlikely.

In the game I'm playing against the allied AI, it's early March 42 and I've laid siege to Singapore. I've moved in all the artillery I had in the area and am bombarding daily. Each bombardment causes about 1000 allied casualties, so I think I need to do this for another week or two before assaulting. Air power seems to get decimated by all the anti-aircraft, so I've stood down my level bombers to refit but I may try bombing the ground forces at higher altitudes. Unlike real life, I don't think the AI is just going to surrender, so it's going to be tough.

IMHO most of this will be spit in the wind in a PBEM. Reference all the other threads concerning 'AI teleports ships', 'AI has no ammo limitations in nav combat', 'AI ...'well there it is
