Suggestions for Jap Submarines

Post by Dereck »

DISCLAIMER:

Up front I want to state that this is for my own personal game and I don't intend to push my feeling/ideas on anybody else and would appreciate the same consideration.

I'm asking for suggestions from any experienced scenario modders out there.

I don't like the aggressiveness of the Japanese subs in this version of WITP. I personally thought the old WITP option of choosing the Historical Japanese Submarine Doctrine was pretty effective. However that option seems to be gone and the Japanese subs are now acting like U-boats which they weren't.

I'm trying to think of a way to drastically tone down their aggressiveness. Not to the point I don't have to worry at all about them but to where they don't park themselves outside of the West Coast.

Any suggestions on how this could be accomplished?

Would making an AI script of some sort accomplish this? Editor modifications (I'm already making quite a few to tweak the game to my personal liking)? Anything else possible?

Thanks

Simplest "quick fix" would be to assign them a bunch of "bozo leaders" and lower their skill levels...  That should neuter them.

Not that I am any expert, but I would agree with Mike. There is nothing in the database that would make them more or less aggressive. Regards to using the AI scripting, I have no clue.

I suspect another way to possibly reduce attacks, though not aggressiveness itself, is to cut both cruise and full speed in half. This limits their reaction range and how much they move when on patrol per day, so it becomes more of a game of chance if theyre in the same hex as your ships or not - rather than them reacting several hexes every turn.

Of course, changing speed may have unintended side effects.

You could also increase the dud rate of the torpedos. While this won't cut down the actual number of attacks, it will greatly reduce the effect of the attacks.

Hi My personal solution to all torpdeo scenarios, was simply to reduce the number of weapon mounts to 1 so as to stop multipul torpdeos being fired all at once, not historical but effective,so instead of a submarine firing 4 torpdeo's from it's bow tubes in one attack, all it can now fire is one,I increased the accuracy of the one torpdeo to counter act the fact of not firing 4,as for dud torpdeos I edited them all to zero, the AI gives you dud's no matter the setting's I beleive it's about 10%,the bonus for only firing one torpdeo at a time, means that the submarine can patrol on station longer before having to return to base to rearm. My solution and I'm sticking with it it works for me.[8D]

Actually I've been thinking for some time about advocating for this. It is actually fairly historical for some Navies. For the early war USN, once the commanders realized their torpedoes weren't working some would fire larger spreads in the hopes that they might do some damage. And against large warships, good sized spreads would be fired. So, perhaps one day, in AE we will see single mount submarine torpedos with some coding logic that increases spread size in certain cases.

As my interest is mostly based from the Britain v German side of things, historically speaking the German Uboats only ever fired 1 or 2 torpdeo's at a time against merchant ships, but did indeed use larger spreads against capital ship targets. But not always, the carrier Courageous was sunk when hit by 2 torpdeos, the Uboat was in the perfect position for a strike, and only fired 2 torpedos.[;)]
