Naval colisions?

Post by Streptokok »

As if I dont have enough problems with transports as Jap in the begining of the war:

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Dec 13, 41

Coastwatcher Report: 6 ships in port at Hong Kong
Coastwatcher Report: 1 ship in port at Wenchow
Coastwatcher sighting: 6 Allied ships at 77,61 near Hong Kong , Speed unknown
TB Hatsukari collides with CM Tsubame at 83 , 69
SS I-124 lays minefield at Lubang - 78 , 78 and sets course for Takao
AK Sasako Maru collides with SC Ch 9 at 64 , 74
Escort TF 306 (1 ship) formed from TF 85 and routed to Cam Ranh Bay

I mean ok if it happens here and there but twice in one turn only few turns in the game?
Oh and there is no warning in game for this, just a report in Operations report....

Didn't know that ships could collide with each other in port. Thanks for the heads up.

Too everyone who thinks this is great, just wait until it happens to one or more of your carriers! I don't care much for these non combat losses of ships! Real or not the player has no control or input to these and no one knows how many times this can happen during a campaign game.

Still waiting for a dastardly "Yorktown runs aground on uncharted rock" message.

I'd still think it's great after the initial "what were they thinking" factor. Accidents happen, especially during wartime. Ship collisions are a part of that and are no different to aircraft being lost through non-combat reasons which no-one complains about.

Yeah, those noncombat casualties are so unfair.  I mean, who'd expect to see something like "KGV collides with destroyer" or "Illustrious runs aground" or "Mogami collides with Mikuma" or something like that?  Those are just so rare as to be ridiculous!

OTOH, it is great fun to see "Nachi collides with destroyer" during a surface combat when you're on the Allied side.

Not so fun, when you are Allies, is to have first the North Carolina and then the Washington collide with the same destroyer during night combat, then the San Francisco collide with said destroyer, and then two other destroyers with each other. Yes, that happened to me.

The mental image I get of that reminds me of the band marching into the deadend street in Animal House, or more appropriately, some of those melees that Civil War naval battles tended to degenerate into.

Several naval officers spent the rest of the war after that night in Pearl Harbour, trying to hammer the dents out of the battleships´ armor.

And do you want to know the best part? That TF, 2 BB, 4 CA, 8 DD, was fighting a Japanese convoy of 2 xAK, 1 PB, 1 E (I think it was Oite). They quickly sank the xAKs, and beat the PB into a pulp. But the escort... that damn little stupid escort... survived the concentrated fire of the whole freaking task force for several rounds, got in four (non-penetrating, of course) shell hits against the battleships, and escaped with only a single 5" hit! AARGH!

What are the chances that a Japanese DD will run down PT-109?  Seriously, though, I think the collision possibilities are very realistic, especially at night in confined waters.  It would be interesting to know what factors are considered in the collision routine, but somebody would, undoubtedly, figure out some way to "game" that part of the system and either figure out how to avoid collisions themselves or inflict them on their opponents.  In any case it certainly adds to the unpredictability part of war and helps keep one alert.

I know, but in the begining of teh war id rather have Mogami and Hibiki collide than have 2 farking amphibious TF's screwd up prior invasion [;)]
