Difficulty in opening Gold

Difficulty in opening Gold! I have the earlier version of CEAW, but when I download the Gold version into the current CEAW directly and try to extract, the extaction process fails. If I extract and then click on the (new) gold version it intiially works, but I'm then asked for the serial number on the CD - but do ot have one of these as I purchased the earlier version of the game over the web. Tried various approaches over a few hours without success (& seem to recall considerable difficulty getting the original version to work as well). I do not understand why it has to be so difficult! Anyway, if there are any quick fixes please let me know - if not I'll just give-up and move-on! Over to you, with thanks
