Fence Sitter , Jump now and buy the game !!

Post by sliver_bullet »

Who am I

I am a light wargamer who cannot stand games that require me to spend few days to learn the rules / manual just to able to play a scenario..

So games like Panzer General Series are heaven made for me , I own Commander Europe at War , WW2 Time of Wrath , Strategic Command series

When Operation Barbarossa become available , I nearly want to buy it immediately but after reading some negative comments about the game ...I decided to wait....

But not a day went without me wondering how is the game ....finally took the courage and bought the game

and ...I have to be honest to say that if you are the type of gamer like me...then don't bother to wait...do yourself a favor ...buy this game NOW !!

Only 2 things here , addition of NATO symbol and the ability to zoom out another level will make this perfect ...

Updates

Battle Planning is a bit hassle without the strategic map /zoom out ( currently only one level)

The mini map will need some time to get use to it as a replacement for strategic map

good on you...and I think the very, very minor negatives are completely over-shadowing this title unfairly. I've never seen so many minor things being so blown out of proportion.

The game is a little rough round the edges, but it's rock solid and plays like a dream. It's released in a far better state than other games nowadays...the "little" issues being made to look as huge as they have been just show what a complete bunch of gits we PC gamers really are.

There is nothing at all wrong with this game and the "buy now" has never been more appropriate...the game, out the box, works. There are a few little interface issues, but the game is not in the slightest broke. It's a great little pick up and play game.

The best £25 I've spent on a wargame this year! [&o]

I definitely agree. After an initial install problem, I have no complaints with the game.

Buy it.

I like it. Simple with s strong nod toward historical verisimilitude, if not precise accuracy. Definitely s "just one more turn" feel.

Jim, it has scenarios of an historical nature. But an accurate portrayal...?

Use of the word "verisimilitude" indicates that I don't see grognard-like accuracy, ala HPS, but the abstractions catch the flavor of the events. The Zitadel scenario is a case in point: Russians dug in all over with a mobile reserve, Germans with powerful units but very tough objectives.

It was the "precise accuracy" that got me wondering [:)]

To me its a game of "soliders" that's missing the grand sweep of Panzer General 1.

Panzer General 2 took the scale of the original game down a notch from the operational to grand tactical - eg: no longer invading Poland but instead, facing an aspect of the battle. This is what Operation Barbarossa does too, its where its roots lay.

It's well and truly a game of abstraction as you say Jim and that's not a bad thing. It's definitely not as silly as "Commander Napoleon at War" where the big cannons fire across the length of countries [:D]

Yet, will its linear and somewhat lean scenarios in parts of the game lead to replayability? Or should the game be viewed merely as a reasonable $35 filler for those times when the more engaging games (mainly board games in my case) are just too demanding to play? I favor the later and that's where my "buy" recommendation lies.

That said, if the game offered the North African Theatre plus ETO at the same price, I'd continue to buy. Not only would the setting appeal to me but the abstracted "filler" type of gameplay would satisfy a niche void I also have.

By that time of course, we'll have maps that zoom out more widely [;)]

"Fence Sitter" here.

Debating this and WW2 - Time of Wrath. I'll be on the road a lot coming up and I need some fresh games to keep me busy on some long flights.

To be frank, the fact that this game is $5 more than Time of Wrath, which seems to be a bigger game, is what is keeping me from pulling the trigger. Which is actually lame because I'll end up buying both.

Nevermind.....

I've played Time of Wrath and whilst I wouldn't say it's a bad game, this is far better. I much prefer firing this up and haven't actually fired up Time of Wrath since the second day of having it...it just wasn't my cup of tea. But they are completely different games...so my personal view doesn't really count for much...depends wwhat you like.

But this is a great game. Whenever I have 10/20/30 minutes to fire up a game...this has been it...everytime. It's by far the easiest game to get into I've had in a long time.

Good luck with your decision.

I have both games and love ToW, but if it were me in your place, I would wait a little bit before buying ToW until it is patched a bit more. Right now there is a bug with the new 1.60 beta patch that around turn 45 is a game stopper for some.

I'm playing OB in campaign mode now and am having a great time. Stable and reliable so far after about eight hours.

I would definitely buy ToW later, but if you want to buy just one game for now, I would buy Operation Barbarossa. Both games are great though.

Well I'm still a fence sitter, but once the first patch/update comes out, I'll fall over to the buying side....[8D]

I admit there are some things that need polishing. No game stoppers I have seen though. I've done the same many times. Patch and buy. [:D]

The price of the game will remain the same after  patch [:)] , so if you eventually end up buying the game , why not enjoy the dinner while it is hot ...[:)][:)]

and really there is no game stoppers here in the initial release version

If its lack of total historial accuracy is not a show stopper for you then you should buy this game. There is no need to wait for a patch, it works just fine.

That "double click" Engineer problem seems annoying from what I have read, so I was basically awaiting the patch to fix that...

Not everyone has that double click problem.

Exactly the input I was looking for guys, thanks. Truth be told, I have been waiting (and waiting) for World in Flames so I guess I could hold off on ToW for a bit, at least until the above referenced issues get resolved, or WIF gets released (or War in the East which is REALLY what I want :-P).

Man, I miss PG so I am hoping this is a close, updated version. 1 final question I know has been asked a million times, is Barbarossa Windows 7 compatible?

I do and it is a pain...but not a game breaker (though I am keen to have it fixed so I can stop saving before I click an Engineer unit!) [:'(]

I have the double click problem. It happens on all units from time to time. It's a pain and takes the fun out of the game. Other than that it is a great game!
