Altaris (Japan) vs Altaris (Allies)

Post by Altaris »

Alright, so I'm trying something a bit different... going to play a Head-to-Head game against myself. I never played WitP until AE came out, so I'm definitely on the newbie side of things, but I think I've made a lot of ground on learning the game over the last 2-3 months. I want to get a better feel for the strengths and weaknesses of both sides, figured this was the best way to do it. Thought I'd also write an AAR to go along with it, to share what I find as I go along.

Game is being played on 2-day turns, non-historical first turn, surpise attacks on.

House Rules:
- Allies can only move TF's at sea and units in China on 1st turn
- If KB used to attack PH, may only bomb for 2 days
- PP's must be spent to move Kwantung Army units out of Manchukuo/Korea
- Garrison req's must be met
- No city bombing against or from Chinese bases
(More to be added as needed, though these would be a good start)

I plan to approach both sides as realistically as possible. At the beginning of each turn, I intend to "blank my mind" as much as possible to the moves of the other side. If the Allied side has no way to know KB is waiting along a shipping path, that will not effect my decision to send the TF anyway. Think I can make this work out well enough for my purposes.

I'm off to start up the first turn, more to come soon!

Japan

Dec 7th opened with one NAAASTY attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese set all Kate TB's to Port Attack at 6K, all Val DB's to Airfield Attack at 16K, and all Zero's on escort duty. Since this is on two day turns, the KB was set to remain on station and run attacks for the 7th and 8th. The end result:
1) All 8 BB's at PH are now on the ocean floor!
2) 2 CA's sunk
3) 9 DD's sunk (6 DD, 2 DM, 1 DMS)
4) 1 AV and 1 PC also sunk
5) Roughly 60 Allied planes destroyed

All this at a cost of about 25 Kate's and 8 Val's... a small price to pay to take down these ships with the element of surprise bonus.

Elsewhere, things are going pretty much standard. Large landings of troops in Khota Baru to begin Malaysian offense, standard landings left in place for PI. All small island attacks except for Guam and Miri have been diverted to assist with Wake Island invasion.

In China, preparing for two massive pushes, aimed at cutting off northern China. In the NW, the 1st Army is going to push west towards Sian, with other armies in the area trailing behind to cover 1st Army's advance and later add firepower as needed. 1st Army is planning to keep moving til it reaches Sian. In central China, all available units are gearing for push on Nanyang. Going to just forget about Changsha for the moment and instead push north to Nanyang, and if I can break Chinese there, on up to Sian to rendevous with the 1st Army. Very little movement in South China, only using what units are available to try and cut off the scattered Chinese units if possible.

My goal in China is to knock out the oil production in Sian, and cut off the oil flow from the far north of China. I'm largely not concerning myself with southern China, as it's proximity to the coast will allow me options to bring in other troops for assistance later as needed.

In other theaters, not completely decided on a strategy just yet. Playing with a "sledgehammer" mentality at the moment, concentrating forces as much as possible to deliver quick, crushing victories in a key spot. For now, that's Phillipines and Malaysia.

Haven't touched production yet for Japan, as I really have no idea what to do here, will probably research and come back to production decisions around Dec. 20th. For now, not too big a concern.
