Patches, etc.

Post by Neptoon »

I fully expect to feel like a complete idiot two seconds after I hit "send", but I've just bought Harpoon 3, downloaded it, installed it, downloaded "Harpoon 3 Update 3.9.4", and installed that. I expected the game to work then, but I'm seeing bugs. Do I have to go back and install all patches and hotfixes and such in the order they were released, or does the latest one include the older ones? One bug, in case you're wondering, is that when I launch Harriers in "Inchon Again" with a 250kg bomb loadout, they don't have any bombs on them once they're in the air.

Yes, you need some of the older patches. Here is the order I recommend as the minimum requirements:

ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-UpdateRelease-380-Inc.zip
ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-UpdateRelease-v3900DR.zip
ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-UpdateRelease-v392bComp.zip
ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-UpdateHotfix-v393.zip
ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-HotfixRelease-v394.zip

I suggest using the PlayersDB for the least number of problems.

That is a problem related solely to the two official databases, OriginalDB and ANWDB. It's ironic that the only two official databases, OriginalDB and ANWDB, are so riddled with bugs. You won't find that problem with the PlayersDB scenarios. That's why everyone has switched over to the PlayersDB.

Welcome aboard, shipmate. [8D]

Wow. Thanks for the quick reply. Ummm, do I have to uninstall and start over now that I've applied the last hotfix first? (It's incredible how tolerant everybody, including me, is of this BUGGY, clunky, idiosyncratic game with its Mickey-Mouse videos, Flintstones GUI, spastic mouse, and crappy sound effects. Did I mention it's BUGGY? Must be love.)

Who says that everyone is 'tolerant' of these bugs?  Check out AGSI's List of Known ANW Issues  Everyone has their own pain threshold.  Your's just seems to be higher.  [;)]

If all you did was install the 3.9.4 patch over the original 3.7.0 installation, I think that you will be okay if you just download each of the other patches and start over.  Normally, I only recommend things that I have personally tried, but your description makes me believe that this should work for you.

If all else fails, you can Uninstall ANW.  There should be an option from the Start Menu.  Don't just delete the folder since the Registry settings won't be deleted.

OK, I went ahead and uninstalled and reinstalled, on the principle that if I didn't I'd never be sure what was wrong if it didn't work without my having done that. But when I went to run the first thingie, "Harpoon3ANW-UpdateRelease-380-Inc", it wouldn't accept my serial number. Any ideas?

Could you have chosen a different path from the previous one for installation?

This is one of the things I thought might go wrong if you just delete the ANW folder because the registry file could be looking for something in the wrong place.  There have been other reported problems with s/n, but I haven't heard of one with the 3.80 Patch.

"Invalid serial number". I tried putting the fix in the same folder with the game, too, but no dice. It doesn't ask for a path during the install before it asks for the serial number.

Can you check out the other patches?  Does your s/n work for any of them?  Are you sure that it is the exact same one you used for your initial 3.7.0 installation?  No chance you might have included an extra space or dash?

If it worked for your 370, it should work for your 380.

No chance, same number, hyphens and all, unless the patch differentiates between the minus sign on the keypad and the hyphen on the keyboard proper, and the installer doesn't, because I've been using the minus on the keypad for both. I was able to install the newest update before I came here, but I can't remember whether it asked for a serial number or not.

I hear you. I've opened a trouble ticket at the help desk, and so far they've pretty much told me to do what you have, and I did, but no dice. Exact same problem after uninstall, reboot, disable firewall and such, reinstall, reboot, disable, install updates...error. I'm waiting for their next reply.

Try copying and pasting your serial number in instead of typing. Might be just a quick way to see if something else is going on.

Did it work for the other suggested patches? If not, which ones worked and which ones did not? You need to install all those patches, so you may as well have them all downloaded to your HDD and try them out.

I just tried out all the patches I listed and they all require the s/n.

Think there are only two possible causes for that:

1. A typo; so try copy and paste like it was recommended

2. The installation path. 3.7.0 installed in another path (think it was "program files") than the later versions do - they install in a subfolder "matrix Games". If I remember correctly this had to do with Vista which caused troubles with several applications (including ANW) when they were installed under "program files".

I tried copy and paste from the confirmation e-mail, no joy. I tried to install the second update, v3900DR, same problem. I downloaded the game just the other day, and when it installed, it did so in a folder called "Matrix Games" in the root of the C drive. I downloaded the updates to my F drive and unzipped to a folder in the root of my C drive called "Games", from where I installed the game initially and from where I'm running the update install attempts. The help desk seems to be ignoring me, so I'll open a new ticket, probably tomorrow. Thanks for all the interest and suggestions. I've found in the past it's usually something obvious I should have realized myself when this sort of thing happens, so be assured I'm not put out by suggestions along the lines of "Is it plugged in?"

As I suspected, you tried to install/uninstall from two different directory paths. That's probably where your problem lies. When you first installed to the "C:\Matrix games..." folder it might have left you some vestigal problems that did not disappear when you uninstalled it.

You might want to try re-installing everything from 3.7.0 and all the patches to the default folder provided and not to the C:\Games folder that you used on your second attempt.

I think Russell over at #harpgamer has sussed the problem (whereas Matrix help did not, giving me what I suspect was a canned reply). I was trying to install the 3.80 patch on a 3.92 installation, in effect trying to downgrade. The reply I got from Matrix said to install "all" patches, and that's what I was doing, wrongly, as it turns out. What I've done now is to install only the patches starting with the first 3.92 one, to wit, "Harpoon3ANW-UpdateRelease-v392Comp.exe", and then the rest up through v394. These all accepted my serial number, as I would have discovered if I'd done what Herman suggested yesterday. I believe my problem has been resolved. Thanks, everybody.

Good to hear. Thanks for the MP match earlier today. Looks like everything installed correctly for you. [:)]
