Pitfalls with Win7

I can't get the game to open from the game menu in windows 7. I don;t know whether I've loaded the game right, but the computer always asks me if I want to let the program change the computer. I don't know who to ask about what to do -- I suspect the problem is that my upgrade to 1.12 simply didn't take.

Would a fresh install be possible, and would that likely resolve the issue? And is there anything else I need to know about running this game in Windows 7?
