Japanese

Post by Venividivici10044 »

Just my thoughts, BUT I really cringe when I see Jap used in place of Japanese. It really would be nice if we could avoid.
I play and post for fun...nothing stated ever carries with it the thought to irritate. If something does...privately PM and I will review.

I hear you, but I really think people are just using an abbreviation.

I use the abbreviation IJ for Imperial Japanese just to avoid what you mention.

Agree with your thoughts; just a hope that people will remember the war is long over and I just find the term disrespectful.

Yeah good luck. I tried to introduce folks to this concept when I first joined the forum - I got run over by realty. In this day and age, we are in the infinitesimal minority and just have to ignore ... [:)]

I strongly doubt there is any intent to denigrate the Japanese people by such usage. We do have some native Japanese here. Perhaps they would be willing to present their opinion. It's really the only one that matters on the issue, IMO.

The Japanese people I know consider the "short" version used by some to be disrespectful, that is how I got educated. But they may not bother to bring it up on the forum. "Shouting" into the wind isn't very profitable.

I see where we may be heading there... Not sure "Nips" is a better word than "Japs" [;)]

Well, as long as there is no chink or nip out there, I'll live. And I am half chinese myself. [:)]

I'm half Japanese, half Chinese, but completely Americanized. Doesn't bother me, others may be offended. My parents were also born and raised here, although technically my mom was born in Hawaii before it became the 50th state. They and other Asians would use it and it was no big deal. I would say this falls in the same category as the "N" word. It can be used and not be offensive, or can be used and be offensive.

Richard Prior and other comedians would use the N word in their routines and it was no big deal, but others like that person from Seinfelt used it and got crucified.

The general rule I use is if you use a derogatory label that's your own race you can get away with it and if you're not then do so at your own risk. Complete double standard if you ask me.

Then again I'm not the most politically correct person around and can be pretty crude and racist at times so I'm not the best person to ask....

One other thing amongst asians there us a pecking order. The Chinese and Japanese are always debating who is superior while Koreans are regarded by both the Chinese and Japanese as inferior. Then you always have the never ending battle between the ABC's and FOB's.

Personally I really don't care and get along with just about anyone. My best friend is from Texas and is about as redneck as you can get.

I have a feeling that most people that type the word " Jap " are merely abbreviating. I do not spell out " American " or " United States Of America ". Instead I say " US " or " USA " or " Allies ". Sometimes I remember to type " Jap. " using the period to denote it is an abbreviation, sometimes I do not. I think that in this case, on these forums it is seldom, if ever meant as a slight. It is just faster to type the 3 letters. Nothing more.

I really like Fark.com. After reading a few articles I always have a strong desire to take a drink. Makes you wonder if democracy is going to survive.

Life is too short for this silly "correctness".

[Dis]respect lies in the context. When someone uses "Jap" as shorthand for "Japanese" the context usually shows that no disrespect is intended. Read first. Then decide whether or not to whine.

We could use other, far more derogatory, abbreviations. Every time the Politically Correct police comes up with their wagging index finger about this, it just reinforces me in my firm decision to keep writing Jap.

For me it was a surprise that "jap" was a degratory term. I suspect it's the same for others whose native tongue is not english, or are not part of the american/anglo-saxon cultural sphere.

Call them yank, I don't care, I'm Yuropean [:D]
But, yes, well, as an American, I guess I wouldn't be offended by Yank or Yankee... I mean they even call their sport teams that way. The only person you may offend here would be a proud son of Dixieland [;)]
