Combine Air Units?

It doesn't seem that you can combine US squadrons into groups, as you could in stock WITP. Is this correct, or am I missing something?

I know that the US starts with several squadrons of the same B26 group in New York at the start of the game. I tried to combine them but couldn't, the best I could do was disband into one squadron to get one massively overstrength squadron.

The groups have been 'squadronized'; so you deal with more smaller groups in AE than the fewer larger groups in stock.
