Issue in keeping a ship..

So I finally saved enough for a destroyer, after few successful captures I decided instead of selling one of the vessels, to keep it.

It says my crew is split up, however Im now stuck on a corvette instead of the destroyer.

How can I get access to my destroyer? Or did I screw up and downgrade for no reason?

Unfortunately, it is the latter.

You can only have one ship at a time. I also got caught on that the first time.

I too got caught with this. I did read the manual just used the tutorial and jumped in. The press released stated we could command a fleet so I thought you could have more than one ship. I have now played enough to see what the fleet action is. Its ok but not what I envisioned.
