WITP Staff Ques on ship location
when clicking on individual ships in witpstaff, I get either two little 'arrows' in very different places, or a 'dot' and an arrow.
what do they signify? one of the arrows (or dots) is always the ships location - but which? and whats the other dot? I thought maybe home port, but thats not it.
thnx

If you mean this picture, then read section 4.7 of the Staff manual.
The dots indicate that the TF did not move that turn. The arrows show the approximate direction it went
for that turn.

RE: WITP Staff Ques on ship location
Hello, Good afternoon from here in the Scotland,
Have been a long time lurker with only a few posts, however I find my self lost when trying to install and run Witpstaff - can anyone help.
First of all I'm not great with computers so if you can help please phrase it as an 'Idiots Guide' so I can follow and do what you suggest.
I have the Witpstaff instructions printed out and in front of me and have already come to a problem in that it says - click on the witpStaff.bat file (which I cannot find) so instead clicked directly on the witpDecoder2.jar file as suggested and thing went fine. Directory db, scenario 1, nationality Allied and as play againts the AI no tick for PBM and no password - then pressed initilized. After that tried to load in reading a save file which was where I began to get lost.
On my drive C went to Matrix games through to saved games where three items (list of numbers) were listed. At this point I am now completly lost.
Can you help?? and talk me through now to install, run and use this tool
Any help you can give will be most appreciated - again remember phrase it as an 'Idiots Guide'.
Thanks in advance, Rab

Sounds like you are almost there rjg ... "List of numbers" do you mean wpae002.pws, etc ? load one of these *.pws files and it should load automatically.

RE: WITP Staff Ques on ship location
yep, sorry rjg ... had to deal with stuff ...
ok so you can only save files into c:\Matrix Games\War In The Pacific Admiral's Edition\SAVE . The autosaves are in c:\Matrix Games\War In The Pacific Admiral's Edition\SAVE\autosave
Run the saved file in Staff ? Well you just open Staff, FILE -> Open and then go to the directory above (use the drop down and start at c:\), click on the turn you want to load and presto ...
Otherwise, I'm unsure what you are trying to explain.
Oh and the name is Damian ... I work on WitpTracker, but am glad to help you
Cheers

Hell Damien,
Thanks for reply. Have followed what you have said - c drive Matrix games etc down to save but there is no mention of autosave - does that mean I have not saved it and need to do Staff over again. If yes do I need to uninstall game and start with a clean installation?
Regard, Rab

RE: WITP Staff Ques on ship location
There is a command line switch for WITP-AE, that creates the autosaves ... don't worry about that now. DON'T REINSTALL ANYTHING... no need.
OK so you are in C:\Matrix Games\War In The Pacific Admiral's Edition\SAVE
you should see something like this ... now, you need to know what file you want to load, so what was the save number in WITP?
Click on that corresponding number and click open.

RE: WITP Staff Ques on ship location
Hello Damien,
Sorry still no luck - no autosave listed. When I click on the save file I'm getting a large list of icons which state aoperation, then more such as asignt with numbers after them. At the very bottom of this list are the three items I remember saving, they are - wpae000.pws wpaeoo2.pws and wpae003.pws and if I click on them they don't open. Would I better trying to install tracker? is it easier to do
Regards, Rab

Rab,
you should only be trying to open a file with a *.pws extension. The other files are text files with the reports generated by the game. These are the text files you should look at at the end of turn, by just double clicking on them. I'd think that trying to open these would hose the Staff DB (and I'm surprised you could do that anyway). So you would need to exit Staff and delete the folder DB in c:\Matrix Games\War In The Pacific Admiral's Edition\tools\witpstaff\ and reinitialise Staff again with the steps you did before.
I'd still like to get this going first before you move over to Tracker if you want... any chance of a screen shot with Staff open?
Tracker, can't say it will be easier ... but there are web instructions with some pics http://sites.google.com/site/witptracker/set-up

Hello Damien,
I think I have got it doing as you suggested, but time will tell. Another question though - how do you use it in the game. Do you have to save the game first then save it to staff. Or can you use it with the game running and on screen? If yes how do you do this.

I'm guessing you don't have WITP in windowed mode (it is full screen right?), well you can set up witp, or Ctl + Esc will allow you to switch applications.ORIGINAL: rjg

Yes, both Tracker and Staff use the savefile info, not data directly from the program. So you need to save a file and then open it in Staff. Then switch back and forward between applications.
The advantage with windowed mode is that you don't need to switch in and out, you can see them both ... like in my busy screen shot, where I'm doing my witp turn, with tracker open ... [;)]
To check out the command line switches (incl. windowed mode) check out the whatsnew.pdf in c:\Matrix Games\War In The Pacific Admiral's Edition
or fb.asp?m=2208109
Good luck time for bed for me soon ... see you when you're ready to give Tracker a try [;)]
