Downloaded SPWaW-7.1 - Freezes PC during setup - Help

Post by lesmk »

I have a Pentium III (933) with 128 meg memory with plenty disk space left. Downloaded SPWaW-7.1 and clicked on the setup icon. No activity and PC freezes. To free up PC, must do a cold reboot (power off and on). Have downloaded the game a second time and same result. Did note that there are two US location to download the game. The first location seems to work but the second location does not exists. Use RealDownload as my download interface software. Please help - I would like to try this game (I have all three Steel Panthers games and love them all!).

Thanks,:(

Are you extracting the setup file to the hard disk first or are you trying to run it from within the zip file? I don't know what to say at this point with over 1500+ downloads this is the first I've heard of this.

I forgot to mention that I am operating under the MS ME software. .ZIP downloaded to hard drive. Enter Explorer, find the folder that contains the downloaded file and double click on the setup icon and.... If I remember correctly, I can't even do a properties lookup on the icon - that will also cause the PC to freeze. When I get home, I'll doublecheck a few things on the system and try again. If it fails again, I'll be in contact.

Thanks, :)

Try this because the file is so huge it takes time for the system to be able to read it, in which it appears to lock up. I've seen this happen on files as small as 20mb and this is over 400mb. Before trying to run it again, disable as much background running programs as possible, then try running the program from the run command in the start menu, if it appears to freeze or lock up don't do anything, just let it sit there for a while allowing the system to properly run it. I would give it at least 5 minutes before giving up hope. Watch your hard drive activity light and see if it's working (flashing at different rates as the disk is being accessed) or if is just a solid constant light which would mean lockup.

Okay, I'll be patient - I am currently downloading the game again, through a different download program - using the defaul internet instead of Real Download. I don't think this is the problem, but just narrowing down the playing field. It is about 68% complete at this time of the post. Once download completes, I will start the setup and wait (kind of spoiled of seeing some sort of response or "loading" messages).

Thanks, again ;)

Yeah it can be very frustrating when it looks like nothing is happening, I just hope this isn't the case for you, I'm hoping it's just slow in the recognition.

Yippee!! Finally got it to install! It kind of helps if the donwloaded file was unzipped first. Must assume that the whole process must have an auto-unzip or auto-extract as part of the install. I have win-zip 7.0 and I don't know if that makes a difference. Once I manually unzipped the file, everything fell into place. I am off and running to start playing the game.

Thanks!!!! :D

I could oh sworn I asked if you unzipped it to the hard drive first. Welcome aboard anyway. Yeap I did but I used the word extract instead how silly of me.
