WMV Player?

Post by JudgeDredd »

This game has a Matrix Games video which is played on starting the game.

Recently I suffered a problem whereby I was unable to play the game...it wouldn't load, giving me a black screen. However on finding the video and renaming it, I was able to get the game started.

Now, I am still having a problem with HoI3 - it will not load at all, giving me a black screen. Now I KNOW HoI3 loads a video...so this is what I need to know...

What does BTR use to play the video? It can't be anything standard, as I can play the Matrix Games WMV file outside of the game...but if start the game with the WMV file there, I get a black screen and an error message...as soon as I rename the wmv file to something else, the game starts.

I think if I can find out what is wrong with my system (audio/video codecs) then parhaps I can eventually get HoI3 to work also...

Your help would be greatly appreciated...all I need to know is how the video is executed in the game...like I said, I can load the video outside the game, so it's not the media player I have on my system.

The WMV is loaded using DirectShow, so will use whatever codecs your system has installed. If something else in your system has changed the default, then it will use that.

I can't give you the specific code samples as it's all copyrighted, but we use the Direct Draw Media Stream Interface

No, DirectShow isn't part of DirectX. Though just for reference I run the game on DX9, DX10 and DX11.

What I would like to try and understand is why would the file work in Windows, but not through the game...the game MUST be doing something different with it.

Codec seems fine. The game runs without the video there but doesn't run with the video there. The video runs outside the game....ergo?

ergo direct show is NOT windows media player. Different animals, different ways of rendering screen information.

Sorry, I am unable to help you with your system issues, unless you ship your system to Australia. DirectShow is a standard Microsoft component, we just invoke it.
