Great Battles?

Based on Slitherine’s popular tabletop wargaming system by the same name, Field of Glory now comes to the PC in a faithful adaptation of this acclaimed miniatures wargame! Without the calculations and measurements required for a tabletop game of Field of Glory, the PC version accurately represents Ancient and Medieval combat where you make the important and fun decisions on the battlefield. This forum also supports the Rise of Rome, Storm of Arrows and Immortal Fire expansions to Field of Glory.

Great Battles?

Post by Noakesy »

This looks interesting, although I was thinking of investing in some metal and using a table top FoG instead. I am willing to accept it's not some "total war" type innovation. Is it very similar to the old "Great Battles of Alexander/Caeser" and so on? I used to quite like those.

Hello!

I bought it today and played a couple of times!

I have "Great battles of Caesar" and played a lot of times.

My first impression:

Of course there are a lot of similarities, but this one has multiplayer option and scenario editor!

These are enough factors for me to buy!

I haven't played Great Battles but I used to play Ancient tabletop many years ago

I've only had the game a few days but on the surface:

- simple interface
- IGO UGO with no phases
- quick playing
- very clever PBEM system and matchmaker, all done through the game
interface
- nice figurine graphics
- fairly basic ruleset but doesn't detract so far
- inexpensive
- apparently very easy scen editor

negatives

- no campaign system, scens only
- will need plenty of scens to keep it alive
- will probably survive based on how large the PBEM community becomes.

Playing 2 pbems at the moment - seems to work well.

I was after something 'beer and pretzel' fun and I think I've found it.

The gameplay is simple but there seems to be a lot going on under the hood. (Troop type, weapons, training... so many combinations and things to think about). Just don't know where to get all that information. I haven't looked through all of the online help.  Makes me want to take a lookt at the FoG miniature rules as well.

I'd love to get detailed army lists with background history and illustrations.  Makes me want to buy the FoG modules just for more historical info.

This game is actually good advertisment for the table top game.

Hope this game sells well so that we get a lot of expansions.  I'd like to have more variety in armies.
