P-38s 1st week of the war
Hey I like the historical aspect of these groups coming on line for service on the West Coast but shouldn't there be a restriction for using them except for the Coast defense. Maybe there is and I just don't know where that shows up.
I see where I can't change their command, but, I haven't run enough test turns to see if I can load them on a ship bound for Hawaii from the West Coast. I know this is gamey and I wouldn't do it, but I am exploring the game.
Speaking of gamey, any way to swap out the good pilots in these groups into the pool and send them off to Europe as a bunch of cannon fodder recruits? No I won't do it but these issues might be considered for house rules for PBEM fans.

From the manual, section 7.1.1, pg.155:
"Aircraft assigned to a restricted HQ may not be loaded on ships or transferred to a base that does not report to its restricated HQ".
As for the pilots - yes, you can transfer them to the Reserve Pilot pool, and replace them with poorly trained pilots. Whether this is "gamey" is ,ultimately, up to you and your opponent. IMHO, given the unit withdraw dates, and the fact they are restricted, the pilots won't be very well trained anyway; but if you can get some up to 60 or so, might as well save them.

Well, it is March of 42 in my pbemail game that I am going to strip them out as soon as I can. I am finding that I have a critical shortage of trained pilots. Any attritional situation and the Allied player is going to be in dire circumstances. Mind you, the Japanese player can do the same.

whats from stopping someone from disbandingthe groups and dumpingthe planes into the pool?

RE: P-38s 1st week of the war
Those P-38 units lose planes and pilots when disbanded. There was some thought put into how to prevent the US from fielding P-38s in early 42 while still having them in the game in case the Japanese were suicidal enough to invade North America.

With some exceptions, disbanding air groups scheduled for withdraw will result in the permanent loss of both planes and pilots. In some cases, even choosing the withdraw option will only allow permanent loss of planes and pilots.
Oops, I was a little slow with my response.

We do not care about the Allied pilots. I think they should all be restricted to the East Coast.
Did I mention that I like playing the Japanese side ?

RE: P-38s 1st week of the war
I can't seem to strip the good pilots - they should be in yellow on the pilot rosta saying they can go to pilot training school but there is no option for me!
RE: P-38s 1st week of the war
I am sorry., but in the game it does state planes and pilots returned to the pool, SO WHAT HAPPENS?

1)the group is white print restricted and in WC the group go to other front and you don't keep planes and pilot and don't receive PP for withdraw/disband
2)the group is yellow restricted you have the choice beetween keep pilot and planes in pool or keep PP for withdraw before scheduled date

What happens when a unit is over due and I still can't withdraw them. The only option is to disband? They are white if I believe.

RE: P-38s 1st week of the war
If they are required to go, then disband them works. I have had that happen a couple of times and it didn't appear to hurt anything long term.
I disband squadrons when I am trying to get planes and pilots into the pool. I don't use the withdrawl button unless I want the squadron back one day.

Just go to the roster of any unit and click on the pilot. It will ask you if you want them to go to the "group reserve". If you click yes, the pilot stays with that squadron but is in reserve status. If you click on the same pilot again. It will ask you if you want to send the pilot to the "general reserve". If you click yes, then that pilot goes into the general reserve and you can assign him to a front line unit by clicking on that unit's "get veteran pilot" button, then click on the pilot from either the bomber, patrol, transport,or fighter reserve. (be careful of the skills that any pilot has) There will be a delay-from 1 to 6 days but that pilot will transfer out of the general reserve into your unit.
As for the p38E, you JFBs should be OK. There are not enough of them to really cause any serious problems. Allies start with about 40 of the P38E and get production for two months only in mid 42. Three squadrons have them at the start of the game but the planes do not go to the pool if the units are disbanded and the units are withdrawn fairly early-so you will never see them. So, at best, you have about 50 total to fret over.
In fact, the Allies get far fewer P38s than in WITP. Some of the late models have very low production figures.
From what I hear p38s are not so uber anyways. They have a 3 service rating so require a lot of time to repair. Really are hard to use out of small bases. I don't think you JFBs have too much to worry about here.[>:]

The manual state that there are some units that cannot be withdrawn. The must be disbanded instead or you will pay the PPs for keeping them in the game.
