Uncommon Valor to WitPAE

Post by gabeeg »

I have been on the fence on WitPAE for a year now...not being able to make up my mind. I finally bought Uncommon Valor and have been just starting to get into it. Now, my question for you guys....If I end up liking Uncommon Valor as much as I think I will (still to early to judge...but looking good)...is it a no brainer that I will enjoy WitPAE?
Kind Regards,

Harry

I would say yes, but please realize that WITP-AE is UVx1000. That is to say, it is the same game system with a lot more units and more detail - and takes a lot longer to play out.

Lots more units, detail and control options. UV is the grandfather of AE, but AE is infinitely bigger.

I was a UV player back in the old days, got it as a present and i really didnt think i would like it ! .. since then i grabbed WitP day 1 and same with AE .. IF you like the UV style of play you will love AE. But be prepared for a serious learning cliff and possible heart attack when you open up the grand campaign [;)]

The forums a great place full of (mostly) helpful people and we can help with the learning cliff. Heart attack though we can't , have a close relative/friend handy with a phone when/if you decide to get AE. [:D]

uv to AE.. hum.. ok lets compare baking cookies to creating a five course meal... and bottling your own wine, don't leave out there are Japaneese wines with special corks... and special factories to make the corks.. oh hell, that analogy is too complex.. AE is nothing like UV.. Super game.. BIG ugly beautiful....

Ah the good old UV times.. [:)]

I think you should buy AE right now.

In fact there is a Guadalcanal Scenario included with AE which covers nearly the same area and timeframe
that represents the UV Grand Campaign.
The advantage of this is that you have all the interface and order setting improvements that where not available
in good old UV times.

To name only a few: setting maximum AC ranges, setting search arcs, converting ships, direct control over raplacement
planes and pilots, detailed combat replays, a more sophisticated naval combat model, more detail to ship damage, detailed
pilot experience levels, more detailed plane models with performance levels based on altitude bands, cleaner A2A war model,...
I could go on for 2 pages worth of improvements compared to UV.

Playing Guadalcanal Scenario is not more complicated than playing UV and you will like it much better. UV was good in its time
but this time is over. WitP AE patch2 is the new Queen. [&o]

UV is simpler and more playable, but WITP-AE is actually the better production (if you see what I mean)

Simpler maybe...more playable, no.
I forgot to count how often my betties got ripped to pieces by heavy CV CAP unescorted because there was no option
to limit range. [:'(]

If you have the money, I would get WITP and learn it as tutorial in size and complexity for getting into the highly more accurate but vastly more detail involved in AE

Why learn both games ? Either is a huge jump from UV and might as well save both time and money just getting AE. PS Gabeeg play the allies in a GC 1st .. better yet go for the scenarios as suggested Guadalcanal will be familiar to you already. Albeit with shiny new knobs on [;)]

Cause I think IF you have the money, a lot of folks think that AE could use a tutorial. I wonder if I hadn't played WITP for years would AE be too intimidating in terms of time and effort

I enjoyed Uncommon Valor, but I don't miss playing it. The AI is pretty bad - terrible, actually. And the differences in how a turn unfolds is so, so much better in AE than UV (no more "uber CAP", etc...).

That said, if I still had the game, I might play it on occasion - as it is far simpler to play and turns go very fast. Unfortunately, I lost the disc and I forgot to make a backup copy of it. :(

On my wish list for AE is a few, smaller scenarios similar to some of the South Pacific scenarios found in UV.

Until the AE edition gets patched and issues corrected Uncommon Valor is the better option. The AI for WITP AE is better by a good margin , so if you play that way you should enjoy the purchase.

I respectfully disagree.

UV will never be what AE is and has become. There's some warts that will be addressed, but you're missing something grand if you don't experience AE. UV is so simplistic by comparison as to be in an almost entirely separate class of wargame.

It's all good Chickenboy. <thumbs up> I feel UV has more action per hour played than AE because of the smaller map but enjoy both games against the AI. I understand others may see it differently. [;)]
