I have an issue with "orders for TF meetings"

Post by findmeifyoucan »

Turn 3 I set my Jap carrier fleet to meet an oil tanker fleet to refuel plus a second larger tanker fleet to meet the other fleet. Turn 4 none of these fleets even moved one hex. I thought okay it takes time to plan so let the orders stand for turn 4 but to no avail all three fleets still sat in the same spot for 2 days. My carrier fleet even got engaged by a PT fleet it was sitting in one hex for so long. GRRRRRRR

I will never place an order like this again. Can someone tell me is this a glitch in the game or is there something I am doing wrong?

Meet (and Follow) are designed for certain circumstances and do not work well in others. Basically, they are designed for "Y" meetings, where the two TFs start far from the destination, come together, and proceed to the destination. They do not work well when the "meeting" TF is much closer to the destination than the "met" TF, and they do not work at all when the "meeting" TF is already at the destination of the "met" TF. There are also issues when the "met" TF is stationary, as the "intersecting course" logic has no basis to work on.

There are a lot of variatiions, some tweaks have already been made in patches, and I suspect there will be more.

For now, you can tell if the meet is not going to work by selecting the meeting TF and checking it's drawn path. If no path is drawn, the TFs will not meet.

The thing is that none of my task forces were stationary, carriers had to move 8 hexes, one oiler 4 hexes and the other oilers about 7 hexes and all their paths were drawn. So, yes definately some work needed here. :-((

I had one CV TF at Luganville, another one hex out of Noumea, when I spotted an enemy CV TF NE of Lunga.  I sent the Luganville force north towards them, and ordered the CV at Noumea to "follow" the other TF at 0 hex range.  I was very surprised to see that, within two turns, the Noumea force had caught up with the other CV TF and was in the same hex in time to coordinate a 3 CV airstrike.  I've also used "meet" and "merge" to have faster escorts catch up to slower transport TF's.  A tanker TF left LA two turns before my DD's were ready, and they caught up to the tankers in a turn after setting them to "meet" and then merge with the tankers.

I've had some issues with getting a faster TF to catch up to a slower TF. The faster one doesn't even leave port. Unfortunately I do not have a save that has this event in it. If it repeats itself, I'll send a save of this.
