Wickes/Clemson

Post by oldman45 »

I found some references that showed the Navy converted/redesignated the Wickes/Clemson DM's and DMS's back to DD. I figured out how to make that happen but I am stuck on how to make it happen in 43 and not cause issues with the already planned DD conversions that are scheduled for the 4 stackers.

Thanks

As I recall, this was more a designation change than a conversion. The units did not rearm to destroyer levels, just lost their specialty gear (mine laying/sweeping or seaplane support) and had a few ASW/AA changes. Seem to recall one ending up with just two 3inch guns and some 20mm.

The reference was not specific so I assumed they put them back to DD status. I know many lost their 4" and switched over to 3".

I'm just yakkin here, 'cause I really don't know, but it seems that if the Navy wanted a Dxx-something, they would give 4 gobs each a Saws-all, and give a welding kit to 2 more, and turn 'em loose on a 4-piper.

But iirc, the Wickes/Clemsons were the last to have pressurized fire rooms. So, if they got converted to something the made them lose a boiler, there weren't no way it was gonna come back. I think Don has the right of it - maybe they just yanked the paravanes, stuck on a couple K-guns, and called them DDs again.

This was the Navy, after all. Not all that bright; but they did throw good parties.
