Dreadnoughts...Forever!! NY59Giants (J) vs FatR (A)

Post by ny59giants »

Greeting from the HQ of the Imperial Japanese General Staff. [8D]

I have stayed away from trying a PBEM game for long enough. Now that the 2nd patch is out and weighting what is out there, I have taken the plunge into the deep end of the pool. I will be playing FatR (Stanislav) from St.Petersburg, Russia using JuanG's BB Enhanced mod. I was going to wait until the CV Enhanced mod came out, but there are enough "what if" toys in here to give me a challenge.

The Imperial Batteline is impressive:
4 x BC Kongo Class - 8 x 36cm
1 x BB Harima Class - 8 x 41cm
2 x BB Echizen Class - 12 x 41cm
2 x BB Nagato Class - 8 x 41cm
2 x BB Yamato Class - 8 x 46cm
2 x BB Tosa Class - 10 x 41cm
2 x BB Sagami Class - 9 x 41cm
2 x BB Ise Class - 12 x 36cm (can be convert to a "fast" class in 180 days)
2 x BB Fuso Class - 12 x 36cm (can be convert to a "fast" class in 180 days)

The CAs are able to do 33 or 34 knots and are armed with 10 x 20cm each
4 x CA Nachi Class
4 x CA Takao Class
4 x CA Ibuki Class
4 x CA Mogami Class
4 x CA Tone Class

I get 5 x CLAA Kuma Class with an AA value of 418 (a few start with my carriers).

I'm awaiting for JuanG to send me the latest plane and ship ART files before I load Tracker to see more details. Right now, both my Mike fighters and Liz bombers (due out in 1/42) have no art work. [:(]

The Carrier force has been slightly modified. KB will still hit Pearl and do so for two days since we are doing two day turns. I will use my 2 CVLs and 2 CVEs in two separate TF in the SRA.

While I take an inventory of my forces and start to figure out where my surface forces that start in Japan go, here is a reason to smile - CVBs. [:)] I get the first of two in Sept 43. However, a brief look at the Allied OOB for carriers shows my that they get 6 of their own. [X(] The Allies get more CVs in '42 than normal.

Thus, a change in my overall strategic thinking. I need to try to force a Jutland ASAP! While I will not get fancy in my conquest of the SRA, KB will be busy in the eastern half of the Pacific. I have a lot of experience in fighting as the Allies in '42, both vs AI and PBEM play. I have the knowledge of what the Allies can do, but have deliberately avoided taking an in depth look at what changes the Allies have in their naval OOB (just a quick look at the ship reinforcement list was enough).

Some random thoughts....
Most of my CVs and BBs are scheduled for their first upgrade during the first three months of '42. They get radar and some minor AA improvements. However, the shipyard time is 21 days plus transit time means about one month out of action. My CLAAs have radar, so the question is what benefit do I get for having more than one ship in a TF having radar??
I have the 144 Rgt loaded for Guam along with a BF. I may skip here and go straight to Rabaul. I need another 4 days worth of PP to buy out the Guards Mixed Bde in Tokyo. Add in the 4th Division at Osaka and I have my forces to work in the South Pacific.
I want to invade Darwin asap. i hope to use either the 38th Division from Hong Kong or the 21st division from Shanghai (as soon as I get a restricted LCU in there to meet garrison requirements).
KB will go hunting for the escaping CVs south of Hawaii as this is where most Allied players send them.

Can I disband one of the two (or both) of the small DD TF that get the first turn bonus and create another with my BBs in Japan?? Or is this an Editor thing only?? If the new TF has a TF number below 10, do I get the bonus??

OK, back to the Operations Dept..[;)]

As the A opponent for Juan I'll be watching this one closely for ideas :).

Good advise: be especially careful with the RN heavy units, and in particular Howe. Her 15" Mark 2 guns are extremely powerful and can easily wipe the floor with the older Japanese ships.

So how many torpedoes does it take to sink a CVB? lol. So you get additional BB, CVB, and your normal allotment of CV/CVL/CVE plus a few CLAA? [X(]

Michael - it looks like you've found a fun what-if mod to play. [:D]

I shudder to think what the allies receive - lol.

Regarding upgrades - I think I'd always like a pair of ships to have radar...

Mike,

I'm going to have to do my best to channel the spirits of John III and Nemo to put a hurting on the Allies. I know there is a personality clash, but with proper medications, I think I can make it work. [:D]

2 BCs will stay with KB while the other 2 will be split with 1 going to the 2 CVLs and the other to 2 CVEs. I will keep the other piars of BB Classes together in either a SCTF or split my older ones in two to have them in Amphib TF to soak up any CD damage.

Hey, will be following this with interest, both to see how your stratergy will differ from mine, and of course to see how it plays out in general - especially since your playing the Enhanced version. [:D]

As for your question;
ORIGINAL: ny59giants

Can I disband one of the two (or both) of the small DD TF that get the first turn bonus and create another with my BBs in Japan?? Or is this an Editor thing only?? If the new TF has a TF number below 10, do I get the bonus??

I think you loose the bonus if you disband the TF, but you can transfer ships to them without loosing the bonus. I've never actually tried disbanding and making a new TF for that ID, but I always assumed it was linked to the editor flag and that was all.

As you seem to want to play the game 'blind', or at least partially so, I'll refrain from offering any advice apart from saying that your overall stratergy sounds good, and will make for an interesting game.

Also, I notice you dont mention HRs, there are a few from our game I suggest you use;

-Japan limited to work on two BB or CVL conversions at any time
-Japan limited to work on four CVE or CA conversions at any time
-Japan should not start CVL/CVE or Hybrid BB/CA conversions before they have lost 3 CVs
-US should not start CVL/CVE conversions before they have lost 2 CVs
-US should not start CV conversions before they have lost 3 CVs

-The Montana and Illinois class BBs cannot use the Panama canal before 03/45
-The FD-1 Phantom and TB2D-1 Skypirate can only operate from land bases or the Midway class CVBs

If you disband the TF, the first-turn bonus goes away. It's tied to the TF in the editor, and the number and type of ships in the TF is irrelevant.

OK, please tell me my notes form when AE first came out are wrong. I thought the "follow" command for the TF assigned to land on Luzon from Formosa were backwards and it was to be changed.

Which is it??
SC TF is to follow an Amphib TF or the Amphib TF is to follow the SC TF. I want an enemy TF have to go through the SC TF before getting to the transports.

Michael, good luck!  You probably won't have to channel John III since he'll soon be available.  You can call on him for suggestions like he has you in the past.

I've been trying my Catalinas on different settings lately. I used to just set them on 50-60 search, 20-30 train and the balance on Rest. I've since changed them to Naval Attack... but then I've upped their search % to 50, along with 30% on train and none set to rest. Nothing much has happened until the last few turns where my Catalina Sqd in Manila has started throwing 2-3 plane attack formations at boats that are in range. The best part is that I have an Air HQ at Manila, so they carry torpedoes! They sunk a boat a couple turns ago, and took a few shots at the xAP Brazil Maru this turn. I LIKE this! The nice part is that depending on what their "orders" are... Naval Search or Naval Attack, that is what they train in. You can also swap between NavB and NavT training by flipping the Using Torpedoes/Using Bombs toggle on the squadron window. Great touches to this game! Nice work Devs

My own impression was that if they were in the same hex and the SCTF commander wasnt a coward, it would move to interpect anything that turned up in that hex. Success would then depend on a lot of factors, including speed, radar, visibility, experience levels, etc.

If I'm correct, if TF 2 follows TF 1, it should go like this.

TF 1 enters hex
Check for enemies in the hex, possible combat.
TF 2 enters hex

This means you'll have to put the SCTF first, or you run the risk of the leading transports entering a hex with enemy forces before the escorting combat ships have a chance to engage them, as they are still in another hex.

Hmm. Seems I might have to revise my own stratergy - I've been doing the opposite thinking it worked.

Any word on when you guys are planning to kick this off?

I'm working on my first turn orders right now. I have taken a short break to watch my football team lose the last game of the season. I am putting both of each BB Class in a SC TF together. My Super SC TFs will be Yamato/Musashi & Echizen/Shinano. They are going to get the best ships for surface combat in way of CA, CL, and DDs. They have aggressive commanders and will go looking for trouble. [:D] The carriers will get the best AA and ASW DDs. KB has 4 of 6 Akatsuki DDs routed to meet them at Truk. The CVLs will get the 4 Yugumo Class DDs while the CVEs and some of the BB SC TF will get part of the 11 Ayanami Class DDs.

I figure with the extra BBs both side gets and with Force Z probably running free, I need to get some BBs close by before I land in Borneo and other places. I don't need to face him with just CAs as the largest ships. Thus, landing outside of Malaya and Luzon will be close to a week after game start.

First turn off to my esteemed opponent.

I did one test run and since we are using two day turns the results at Pearl were good. We shall see if that actually happens again.

China is not going to be a lot of offensive action for Japan. Mainly, I gave orders to move troops to a particular base to meet garrison requirements in order to free up more powerful units. I see one major operation, but it will take some time to get things organized.

Stay Tuned!!

Air Raid Pearl Harbor...This Is No Drill!!

Post by ny59giants »

With so many AARs starting, I think some feel they don't want to read another one. Since this game is a mod, I will post part of the first 2 day turn, but edit out the extra stuff and make comments before going to an area by area style AAR.

We did a non-historical first turn. The Allies were allowed to set up their fighters on CAP. My Zeros did well, but not my Vals and Kates (see screenshot below). [X(]
