3.4 won't open
I got the 3.4 patch in order to test Directive 21 with it, but when I install it the game won't open. Here's what the files look like, I wondered if anybody else had an issue like this, or might have any clues.

RE: 3.4 won't open
Still the same problem. If I replace the 3.4 Opart 3.exe with the old one it works fine. We've tried a bunch of solutions but no luck. I guess it's something to do with my computer (it won't work on my XP machine, and we know it isn't compatible with my Win98 machine) but thought I would bump this thread just in case anyone else has the same problem and comes up with a solution.
RE: 3.4 won't open
I've had this problem with other old games. Never with TOAW. I imagine you've tried to run it directly from the folder without going through the menu screen? I think it's referred to as Quick Start. You've probably gone through all the basic trouble shooting exercises. Have you tried running it from the command line box? I think it used to be called DOS box.
It probably doesn't like one of the dll it has to run at start up.

RE: 3.4 won't open
Can you try double-clicking on opart 3 to launch it directly instead of through the launcher? Also opart 3 should be version 173, not 118 can you double-check the version number and try re-installing? If that fails, can you post the first dozen or so lines from the toaw_log file please?ORIGINAL: sPzAbt653

RE: 3.4 won't open
Double clicked the Opart 3 file and get the same error. The version 118 was from the old screen shot, v173 is what I dl'd and used now.
I can post the toaw_log ... um, where is it ??

RE: 3.4 won't open
Did you try and disable the opening movies? Can that be done without starting the game?
RE: 3.4 won't open
um, I don't see it. I've got the same thing that you can see in post 1 above. I don't see a toaw_log ??

Not that I've seen. Everytime I reload or redownload a version, it resets that stuff.

For the log try this. Right click the exe file. Click properties. On the shortcut tab in the Target window make so it looks like this: "C:\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War III\Opart 3.exe" toawlog uberdude
Basically what you are doing is adding toawlog uberdude at the end.
This will create a toaw log.txt file in the Opart directory.
Here's what one looks like:

RE: 3.4 won't open
Thanks, I always turn it on, and forgot it was off by default. Another option would be to open the opart 3.ini file and set the toawlog=Y instead of N.ORIGINAL: Panama

I got tired of explaining how to set up shortcuts [;)] It's a lost art.ORIGINAL: Panama

It probably is the movies. There's an entry in the same Opart 3.ini file, or they\ silest solution may be to move the wmv, avi, and other video files to a separate location.

RE: 3.4 won't open
I changed the config file to 'nointro=Y' and 'toawlog=Y', double clicked the 'Opart 3.4' exe file and got the same error, and still don't see a 'toaw_log". Arghh !!

RE: 3.4 won't open
sPzAbt653,
What OS are you running? If Vista or Windows 7 you may try right-clicking on the executable and set the 'Run as Adminstrator' flag. You shouldn't need to set any compatibility modes.

Win XP.
RE: 3.4 won't open
I replaced the 3.4 exe with the old 3.2 exe and now it generates the toaw_log. Maybe it seems that when trying to open the 3.4 exe that it isn't even getting far enough to generate the log before it kicks me out for some error.

Steve have you done or considered a complete reinstall and patch

RE: 3.4 won't open
Yes sir, I done did that one already! but thanks for the thought. I can't list everything I/we have tried, so I appreciate the random suggestions because nobody can be sure what is going on. I thought I might have it licked when I went to install on my Win98 machine, but now we know that doesn't work. I just don't have the capacity to figure out what is different between 3.2 and 3.4, or what my computer sees as a difference. Typical computer crap, eh ?
