A Goblin gets Pixel-ated

Post by Capt. Pixel »

-or- "A Goblin find Fresh Meat"

You can take the title for what it's worth (and I figure at least a few tacky jokes would be in order :p )

THE Goblin (who has proved himself kind, courteous, and a glutton for punishment) has offered himself to me as a PBEM opponent. I thank you sir, this should be a hoot.

August 17, 1943

Col Colonna, commander of the Italian Yahoo brigade,

(I have absolutely no knowledge of Italian formation designations, or much of anything else Italian, either. So bear with me if I gaff),

has been ordered to take his brigade to a point on the frontline, somewhere in Europe. pretty vague, eh?

The Colonel is mightily concerned. This area they're heading towards is known to contain large amounts of Soviet Goblins. And, from what we've heard, this is definitely goblin country.
Why does it seem theat EVERY country is Goblin country?

There are wide open spaces with a few rows of trees parallel to our approach from the West. I would have much preferred more cover, but we'll do with what we've got.

Once we bolt through that slaughterground, we'll likely meet up with goblins infesting the rather heavily forested Eastern zone of our sector. Prime goblin ground. Darn!!

A quick crackle over the radio, and 1Lt Gallina has his orders to call all batteries to fire in preparation for the advance.

81mm smoke rounds, fired from a half dozen locations in the Italian zone, drop in to obscure sighting from the heights on the Goblin side of the sector against our lanes of approach. The Camion con 105 pepper HE near each of the two East-West roads, one or two kilometers in front of the advance.

A half dozen goblin scouts (?) near the Soviet front line perish in the Italian hellfire at the front lines. So sad. Hope there's enough left for shish-kabob.

The mortars load up on their Guzzi trialice and zoom off to parts unknown. At least to where there's no obvious mortar smoke trail. ;) The Camion section drop barrels, close the back gates and trundle off to new firing positions to further confuse Goblin gunners.
Ahh, we are so sneaky , yes we are.

Italian motorcycle squads gun their engines, pop their kickstands and bounce off across the countryside. (ala Steve McQueen in "The Great Escape").

Sgt Buongiorno and his MC squad bolt out in front of the brigade and recon a short bend in the northern road. (taking the center five VHs in the process.) Realizing that his squad is being sighted from some nearby forest, he orders smoke grenades dropped and retreats back into the forest.

Other than a prickly sensation at the back of my neck (darned barber), I haven't had the pleasure of drawing a goblin into my sights, yet!

But the time will come. Yes. Very soon, it will come.

The Yahoo Brigade players

Col Colonna - I don't know Italian, as I mentioned earlier, but this strikes me as an Italian version of Major Major in Catch-22. (Colonel Colonel?) Probably not, but close enough for a chuckle.

1Lt Gallina - "female chicken" - am I right? If so, it's a fitting name for a forward observer. :)

Sgt Buongiorno - I kid you not! These are the names given on the unit info pages. This is better than most names I could think up. :D

We'll meet more unit leaders as the game progresses.

So, there you have it! The Italians meet the Russians. (Both experience 70) You've heard of a Battle Royale - this is a "Battle Bagatelle"

Have at you!!

A Sticky Goblin

Post by Capt. Pixel »

"reports coming in from all along the front, Colonel. Our forward scouts have contacted the enemy and they are retreating! We are victorious, Colonel!"

"Don't be hasty, Vincenzo. I find it hard to blieve that mere conscripts are all we are to combat this day"

Col Colonna muses to himself, "A most devious planner, that Goblin. He makes me waste time and ammunition scouring the forest of his pathetic conscripts, while he sits back and assesses the situation. Perhaps I should deal with this as if I were assaulting a minefield."

Sgt Giannini makes first first contact with his MC reconn group. Two score enemy soldiers are sighted before rifle fire kills two scouts and forces a retreat.

Over the next several minutes, Motorcycle recon uncovers nearly two companies (24 squads) of Soviet Conscripts. The MCs rack up four dozen kills, but it's not going to be fast enough. I know there's even more out there.

2Lt Santini's Flame section took a hit while riding Sgt Rossini's P26/40. Sgt Rossini buttoned up as Private Sarducci and the flamethrower rolled off the port side with a bullet in the arse and Santini and Pvt Guido tumbeled off the right side.

The P26/40 lumbered left and faced the now cowering Conscripts, let loose with 75mm HE and several sprays of Mg fire. The Soviets panicked and dove directly towards the tank and flame squad. At this point Santini and Pvy Guido scrambled back onto the tank. Rosinni desperately pivoted trying to machingun the fleeing soldiers. Poor Sarducci couldn't scramble away from the grinding treads fast enough. :(

Finally, 1Lt Testa got his P26/40 into position. He radioed Rosinni to face South, then ordered his gunner to man the machine guns only. A couple of quick sprays, and the goblin squad was no more.

Conscripts was an interesting choice. They're rather like roaming minefields. They take one hit and retreat. That's not so dumb. It's going to take me forever to drive these pests out of this heavy forest.

Got yourself a real 'Tarbaby' there, eh Bre'r Bear? :D

This is going to be world record quick. It seems all Italian tanks are flame tanks, because they are all packing flame-throwing infantry units. I expected to see the flame throwers, and wonder why most other nations do not have them. Like the Soviets. Anyways, I never even got kind of close to getting a shot at an Italian tank.

Surrender, ha!

I'm waiting for it to start raining Goblins from the sky and sprouting little Goblin Partisans like mushrooms.

I've now identified at least five companies of these bloody Conscripts. There's probably six. I don't care to think what they're doing in the bushes beyond my sight. But I'm pretty sure I don't have that many bullets.

He's right though, the Conscripts are rolling back like a carpet. In several instances, I was able to 'herd' multiple squads into an area and do the big flamethrower trick. There are many roasted Goblins. A brace of 105s and 81mm mortars are pounding all up and down his line, every 150 meters or so. Not many casualties (everybody's already pinned), but apparently, a fair amount of supression.

Now he's started pounding my backside with his 120s. The Yahoo Brigade does not appreciate that!

My border recon/security forces, Incursori with Sahariana, are also having a rough time of it. Four Sahariana bought the farm finding a couple of AT guns and several HMGs on our perimeters. They haven't worked out the way I'd hoped.

The way it's looking, I'm going to have to kill a squad of these every 50 meters, all the way to the map edge. Gonna be a long, slow slog through the woods. Or is it?

Hmmm :)

I was not joking about the surrender. I'm going to try one last thing, and see if it works.

I gave up trying to rally Conscripts after the 8th fail or so.

I killed a coupla tanks that round, and a coupla flame crews.:D

I had 17-20 units retreat at my turn end. Next time we try with Characteristics ON, and the numbers at normal!:D

And your faith is well placed, my friend. :)

"Sir, sir! Sgt Decarlo reports a large number of enemy armor swarming the center of the sector around the bend in the Northernmost road! More than a dozen sir!"

"Whatsa matta you? I knew they were out there. Order the armor in that area to attack, Vincenzo"

"Sir? Nobody's responding to radio, sir. All I'm getting is static."

"Well then YOU know what to do. Fill in the hole, dammit. Get to it!"

This, in and of itself would have been enough to deal with if not for the radio report from the SM81/Ts dropping several sticks of Folgore within a klick of the Goblin artillery park.

"Mama Mia! ...I'm counting ... 15, 17, 21. Yep there's at least 21 large tanks heading towards your lines along the northern road, over. ... Roger! We're taking fire from triple-'A'. Gotta go. Over and out."

So this is great  Not only do I have to tweezer bits of Conscript out from my under treads, but I've got half the bloody soviet armor (at least 28 tanks) heading right into my lines across a 300m front. Kinda like a center punch through sheet metal.

Things are going well in the southern forest, though. Conscripts are retreating faster than I can catch up. If I can maintain momentum, I might be able to swing around and flank that large armored force, while he's embroiled (pun intended) with my flame sections.

Now I'M predicting a short end to this battle. And it appears I may have mis-titled this thread. :o

Those T-34E m.41s are like armored hemispheres! Their armor isn't particularly thick, but they don't have a slope of less than 30 from any direction. Everything ricochets off.

A line collapses

Post by Capt. Pixel »

"pant..pant.. We got three, sir. But we had to fall back. Tomas got it and I can't locate Pvts Farancelli and Lotsa."
"Good, good Farinelli. Get your head down! I can hear them coming. Here we go again"

The Soviet armored spear has struck, and blunted, against the valiant Italian line. Tanks are backed up like the New Jersey Turnpike at rush hour! :D He's stumbling over his own guys to move forward. That is a LOT of armor. This is an artillerists dream. Or will it become their nightmare?

"Colonel! Colonel! It's your son, sir, Sgt Colonna on the radio"
"We have to bail, Papa! A squad flanked our tank and blew the drive wheel. We're dead in the water."
"Get your crew out son. Make your way to Point Baker. I'll see you there. Good luck son. Good luck"
"I love you Papa, see you th.... sprzxlbbtzzs...sf .. ffzzzdppp. .. Pop!"

Folgore in the Goblin rear area have scrapped three AAMG off the hill side behind his victory hexes. They doggedly press forward.

I'm hoping that a constant barrage will slow his armor enough for me to dispatch it piecemeal. I'm hoping he'll divert some of his armor towards the infiltrators and paras. There's also some hope that if I can eliminate enough of his Conscript force, I can force a morale break. But that is a really loonnnnnng shot. :(

The Thin Red Roadbump

Post by Capt. Pixel »

I got curious about what was hitting me, so I set up what I perceive to be the force Goblin is coming after me with.

I estimate he has 6 companies of Soviet Conscripts, 3 Companies of T34s, 2 platoons of BT-7s and a couple of sections of T60Es. In addition, he's called reinforcements. Probably another 2 Companies of T34s. (That's 90 squads and 60+ tanks!) He called reinfrocements right at the beginning of the game, judging from their position on the battlefield now.

His thin line of conscripts, emplaced deep in the forest, managed to slow my progress almost to a halt. They've taken many casualties (I estimate 30% or more) but continue to slow my advance. They're driven to retreat easily enough, but slow moving in the forest plus having to stop every 50m and shoot someone is just taking forever. I'm still finding the little buggers advancing behind my lines. Cheeky!

I know there are large holes in his line, but I can't find them because of the thick forest. Goblin has definitely done a better 'read' on the tactical terrain and situation than I did.

Sgt Colonna, against his father's orders, has managed to rally his crew and they're desperately fighting off two or three squads from their beleaguered tank. Flame sections and squad assaults are attriting his armored force at this moment.

The Folgore platoons in Goblins rear are receiving blistering levels of 120mm mortar. I think he bought 50 or 60 tubes! But they are pressing forward towards a small, weakly defended hill overlooking the rear VHs.

(For future Goblin opponents:
His mortars are at the rear top and bottom of the map and supplied by ammo dumps. One might consider infiltrators or glider drops near there. Also, a nice heavy barrage or two might force the mortars to retreat, right off the map!) If only my artillery wasn't running for their lives. :(

Reserves are manuevering to fill the gap and reinforecments are on the way. The thrust WILL be turned and consumed by Italian perserverance. :p

Good tip, Cap'n. Beware though - it's no use if Goblin has picked the battleground. You'll find your infiltrators wading through 1 hex vis and a crapload of cheap-*** recce units! I infiltrated close of his f-cking artillery and still got nowhere near it.

My tip: If playing Goblin - don't let him set up the battle :D

The battle-

I have driven through the center, thru Italian Blackshirt infantry just behind Capt's main battle line. My tanks have fought to within a few hexes of Pixel's victory objective at his rear. I finally got revenge on those 105 SPA's that have been pounding on me! One dead, one wounded! They are on a hill just behind his rear objective.

I also see more blackshirts, and an ammo carrier, plus a mortar w/ transport.

The Red Tide will not be stopped by these puny Italian sandbags! Surrenda you a face! Uttsa matta fo you?

He got me. I can't get away. Reinforcements coming.. too late.. aaaagghgghhhh.

Good job chap. Now you get a bunch of Italians for your workcamps. Lucky you!

He hosed me, people. Ripped through my lines like a plasma torch. Don't know how I could stop it with much of anything available to the Italians. Or any other army either (US Army notwithstanding :) ) Many lines of fleet infantry might have slowed him a bit.

The momentum of his assault was too much to stop or deflect. I couldn't get enough of my forces in place fast enough to do either. I always seemed to be one turn behind.

Italian line casualties were at 50% and about to climb rapidly as Goblin had managed to flood my rear area with his armor.

Even though my artillery park was on the move and fairly mobile by artillery standards, it is darned difficult to outrun a T-34.

Reinforcements were to arrive next turn. They would have come in on a road to his right flank. But it didn't look like there'd be much to reinforce when they got there anyway.

Hey sorry, no offense G! :)

Yes ofcourse you set up fair, but you prefer to pick terrain/weather where you have an advantage don't you? I'm doing that as well, it'd be dumb to do otherwise.

My point was that you're a mighty tough opponent, one stands a better chance vs you if you don't get to setup the playground as well. :p
