Battle of the Marianas (Japs)

Post by EUBanana »

Go away Erik!

My friend Erik isn't really up for the Big Game, and neither am I really as I'm already playing one. Also we were looking for something different. Some action in 1944 appealed as it'd be a Bit Different, so we're playing Andy Mac's Marianas scenario after Bullwinkles marketing efforts.

I'm the Japanese.

We've done a few turns but there have been no major clashes yet.

I've got quite a few aircraft of moderate experience but mostly older types who I'm sure will be minced by Allied air - and they are irreplaceable! no replacements. The CV force arrive 15 days into the scenario, so a bit over a week to go.

My vague plan is to try and avoid his main force and nibble around his edges, so no head on CV clashes if I can help it. Japanese moves so far have been timid - beefing up minefields, positioning Japanese subs between Jap bases and Allied ones to act as early warning, and initiating training program. Allied activity has been limited - aerial mines being deployed at Truk caused me to send two AMcs there which essentially counters that. The Allies have also been bombing Wake which is essentially bare, no aircraft and a tiny garrison.

One thing I have noticed is that if an Allied sub sees something in 1944, it's dead. An AMC I sent to tend the minefields in the Marianas was immediately torpedoed by USS Hake three times, and sank. Later on an AKL in a convoy beefing up supplies was nailed by Hake again. All escorted, of course. Jap ASW did nothing worth mentioning. Meanwhile one Japanese sub was attacked by Allied ASW and smashed up pretty good, so... if you're playing Japan if I were you I'd be terrified of what Allied subs are going to to do to you in the late game...

Not much going on atm... Irvings cant handle heavies at night, 1 Irving shot down today. Late war Japanese aircraft don't look much like an improvement on early war Japanese aircraft to me - the Frances looks just as combustible as a Betty!

Calm before the storm.

First day with an actual clash that wasn't bombing undefended airfields or B24s versus Irvings at night.

And what a bunch of nancy boys started the battle.

However I see American carriers now east of the Marianas so its almost hammer time.

The Judies flew from Tinian. He has minesweepers at Saipan loitering there by day time so I assume that is his target.

Combined Fleet turned up today, so many toys. So many irreplaceable, obsolete toys. About 300-400 carrier aircraft, 5 battleships, the works. They are headed to a point well west of the Marianas, to see if there are any opportunities.

Meanwhile the LBA is reigned in quite tight, I'll have a go at the minesweepers but not his carriers, is the idea.

Battle is joined properly today.

Two Japanese CLs buzzed his minesweepers - they found DDs instead. I would have thought two CLs would wipe the floor with some DDs in daylight but the Japanese performance was bad. Really bad.

Then Gods own carrier air arrived and wiped out my rowboats and yachts. Somehow the CLs got away with it, even though they were in range.

No way is Combined Fleet going near that, I'm going to wait a bit and see if a window of opportunity presents itself. The ordered Japanese response is cagey, very high altitude Zeroes, Judies range capped at 1, Betties in the rear are stood down, too precious, most of the Japanese submarine fleet is ordered to keep mining Tinian.

Good to see this AAR. I don't have the patience to write one right now.

I'm six weeks into an AI game as the Allies, so I can tell you a few things if you'd like.

Yes, subs see, and it dies. They WILL sink your CVs if they find them.

Yes, Allied DEs have 11 ASW ratings. Your subs will die if they are found, especially your RO boats. Use them to pick off cripples retiring from the landings. I'm not sure their best use is as early-warning spotters. The invasions will come--he has no choice VP-wise--and you know where they'll come. The amphib TFs will be massively, and I mean MASSIVELY, escorted. It's trivial for the Allied player to incude 20 DDs/DEs with a landing TF carrying Marines. Stay away. Let them get chewed up by your impressive CD units, then pop 'em on the way home. He has to make at least two main runs at two separate islands to get VP ponts to win. The second run will have less oomph than the first if you get the cripples.

Your LBA on Saipan and Guam is toast. Accept it and move on. The AI didn't get one hit on any ship before it all died. I put 8 modern CVs off Saipan with Hellcats and Corsairs on 70% CAP. Lunch was served. You won't win this scenario in the air. You'll win by making him run out of time.

With that in mind, more mines is an excellent move. He has nearly no anti-mine assets. DDs and DEs found most of those I destroyed. AKAs and APAs found the rest.

If you have time to get one more fort level, do it. The landing forces have to come a long way from PH, and they're fatigued when they hit the beach. He has some engineers, but not a huge number of LCUs. Forts are as importnat as the CD units.

His wandering around the wilderness with Truk and Wake shows one of the Allies' main disadvantages. He is nearly blind as far as air recon goes. There is VERY limited recon in the first two weeks from Eniwetok and Midway. He has to "recon by force" with his CV TFs to see what's going on in the Marianas.

OTOH, once he thinks Truk is toothless, you might sneak some goodies in there from your main starting bases--fast surface raiders maybe. He'll have CVLs and CVEs enough to escort re-supply convoys, but you have some good AA ships too (BBs.) Not good enough to stand up to 8 USN CVs, but good enough to snag some cheap VPs on his flanks. An xAK is worth more than 5-8 shot-down TBs as their brothers hit the IJN capital ships west of the main action.

The main thing I've learned is, if the Japanese fight the historical tactics, they lose. The only way to win the VP battle is to stay away from his knock-out punch (CVs) and bleed him of ships and time. It's hard to forget about LBA after playing the GC's early years, but here those planes are just fodder. I might even consider pulling any back that have the range, just to avoid handing over the points.

Good luck. I'll be reading.

RE: Battle of the Marianas (Japs)

Post by EUBanana »

Turkey shoot over the Marianas - he did move his CVs so close that the Judies went into the buzzsaw, while the mother of all bombing waves hit Saipan very hard. 6 Allied for 67 Japs shot down as the samurai went into the buzzsaw.

However so aggressive was he with his CVs that his CVEs are actually in the invasion fleet, an error on his part I suspect. With the result that CVE Sangamon was shelled very badly by Saipan Fortress, and another CVE smashed up a bit too. The CD defences in general did quite some damage.

Last cargo of mines is en route via RO boat to Saipan, no more in the pool. A RO boat attacked what looked like an ASW TF just west of Eniwetok, torps missed, and it was attacked very heavily but somehow managed to survive with minimal damage.

An AV is at Ponape and float planes are now reconning Eniwetok, might be valuable information if I decide to raid.

Combined Fleet has moved off as there are subs around between Pelieu and the Marianas, it is now position well to the northwest of Saipan, away from likely sub lurking points. A fast SAG based around the two Kongos is en route to Truk to be ready to threaten his flank.

His land units are not sufficient for a quick conquest unless he has a lot more. And his carriers cant stick around forever, right? Especially if he's bombing every day. So I'm still poised to exploit any windows of opportunity should they present themselves at the Marianas themselves with the main body of the fleet.

RE: Battle of the Marianas (Japs)

Post by Bullwinkle58 »

ORIGINAL: EUBanana

Sounds like you're doing pretty good.

See why I encouraged disspirited Allied players stuck in the GC in May 1942 to come into this scenario for a "vacation"?[:)] Those CV's are incredible power. As the kids today like to say: "Go big or go home." This scenario lets you go massive if you're the allies.

He did the same thing I did--embed the CVEs in the actual landing TFs. I did not count on the Saipan fortress to rip me a new one like that. Next time I'll trail them by a hex in their own TF. Andy made the CD units the great equalizer in this one.

He also, like me, underestimated forces needed to knock Saipan down. I brought the 4th Marine Div, three Marine infantry regiments, and assorted other EABs and arty. Not nearly enough. The 4th is stuck at 80-82 fatigue and getting bombarded every day. I sent the 27th Div (?) in and it got chewed by the CD units and landed disrupted. I'm now sending a THIRD wave full of Guam-prepped infantry. It'll get chewed on a PP basis and I deserve it to. I mismanaged the landings about six ways from Sunday, and AE will not allow that. I thought I had enough . . .

Re the CVs and resupply, yeah, you're right. Sent them early and cleaned out the nest of LBA, but even with fuel Replenishment TFs they ran out of ammo, and Eniwetok is the closest filling station. I had to leave the beaches with Amphibs still unloading, with just CVEs, and, guess what? A lot of the Guam LBA had read Monty Python ("I'm not dead yet."), got itself repaired just as my CVs disappeared over the hill, and had a light snack on my APA/AKAs at Saipan.

Reminds me--he has a LOT of AOs and assorted escorts, and he needs them. He can support from Eniwetok, but it loads slowly. PH most likely. Roi-Namur/Kwaj. is in the wrong place for efficiency, and they load slowly too. Sub got AO Platte (I got it too), and this is another source of VPs. The scenario isn't long enough for you to really hunt down his Replenishment capacity, but you can dent it.

I used Eniwetok as a rally point going and coming. I detached the mortally wounded there and then sprinted for PH with the still breathing. I don't know if he'd do the same, but a raid there might be bloody. Timing is everything, however.

Another day of him mulching Saipan with bombers, but the CD guns chewed up even more ships. Not sure if the minefields have done anything but they've not been cleared so I'd like to think he's taken damage from mine hits as well.

He's got about 2 divisions on Saipan, about 1 on Tinian. He's got the advantage on Saipan but not enough to really take the place, especially given the beating his APs and LCIs got. I wouldn't want to be a marine or a Jap on Saipan I think.

Not really much I can do but he's had three days shelling the crap out of the Marianas with his CVs and he's gonna have to go at some point. With no Allied airfields in range, then the Japs will come and out and play while he's gone.

Incidentally this is what I mean by 'using the RO boats as recon'. Sure, I know his objective, but what I really want to know is - where are his CVs? Subs are good CV recon, any 'Dive bomber spotted' means he's around. Where he's around, its best for me not to be around.

I got some issues with rearmament, looks like Truk is going to be the only place on map where the fleet can rearm. Thats a bit of a bummer.

He did Saipan and Tinian simultaneously, which I didn't think I could do safely, sea-lift-wise. He has a lot of various armor units, but they eat up ships. If he did both he doesn't have a huge supply cushion on either island I'd say.

A surprisingly good turn - my minelaying subs actually tore into his ships at Saipan with torpedoes. I guess thats what you get when all your sub captains are aggressive? BANZAI

Plenty of torps left despite being on mine duty so the IJN subs are laid out between Eniwetok and the Marianas now, I see plenty of stragglers.

He moved his CVs west of the Marianas which caused some panic at IJ High Command, however my own CVs, up around Iwo Jima now, remained out of range.

My fast battleship squadron arrived at Truk today and blew away an AP which for some odd reason he's had loitering around there.

Guam has been utterly trashed, Saipan moderately damaged, but Tinians airfield is still working. I've ordered the Judies out again, and even reinforced with a second Judy squadron - we're talking 20 divebombers. If he keeps his CVs away from the landing zones I expect results. My fast battleships meanwhile have been ordered to shell Eniwetok which looks fairly clear. He's clearing the minefields at Guam too which has provoked me to send out my two fast CLs as well to try and nail em. Thats... something of a kamikaze mission, but they may get away with it if he has his CVs wandering around the map rather than protecting his landings.

RE: Battle of the Marianas (Japs)

Post by Bullwinkle58 »

I think moving your carriers to Iwo is a good idea for now. If he goes up there with his he's essentially taking them out of play on an ammo basis, at least until he has an island and moves his AE there.

Looking at his force mix on S. and T. it looks like he brought no arty (?), and only a portion of his armor. Strange. He has some powerful armor units, and a lot of LSTs, and in RL tanks were important on Saipan. It's a relatively big island, and Andy gave it good forts in the scenario. More armor would help him.

I also noticed he managed to land part of his Amphib Force HQ LCU, possibly in error, possibly because he doesn't understand that this one should be left offshore on a command ship, in hex. If he unloads the rest he's volunteeering for more disruption and landing losses on successive waves.

Assume the AP at Truk was a sacrificial picket?

RE: Battle of the Marianas (Japs)

Post by EUBanana »

He moved his CVs back so the Judies went into the grinder.

He's also made a landing on Guam, surely biting off more than he could chew. my CLs are one day out, I've decided to let them have a go, as it looks like he only has DDs there. Should be a night engagement tomorrow, and Kongo should be hitting Eniwetok as well.

Plenty of stragglers between Eniwetok and the Marianas. I'll have to time another visit by Kongo and chums to see if we can catch any near Eniwetok, if he keeps his CVs at the Marianas. I'm assuming he won't though, how many bombs are on those things? In which case my CVs at Iwo may sortie.

He has no idea of the Japanese OOB, having not looked at the Japan side of the game yet, he likes working in the dark. i assume thats the reason for the Guam thing! Be curious what he does now, I think he's dissipated his forces too much, maybe he'll have to evac from one of the three beachheads.

Apparently the AP at Truk was a bug. It arrived after its withdrawal date so it was sucking PPs away from him and he couldnt find any way to withdraw it, so he sent it to its doom.

Mine weren't very disrupted, but they were very fatigued (80ish.)

In my game Saipan just fell on July 26th. It took three full infantry divisions and more armor than he has there (I had about 1400 AFVs on Saipan, and needed them. They die a lot.) OTOH, I made some timing errors in the first wave and let my guys rest about 33-50% of the time over 1.5 months so I could attack at about 50% fatigue.

I thought doing two islands at once would be risky. Doing three is insane.

Extreme violence this turn, went quite well for the Japs, loads of surface combat.

CV Shokaku was torpedoed by Hake up at Iwo, but the torp apparently did 1 major floatation damage. Lucky me.

DD Hibiki is on 86 flot damage from being mined, she won't make it.

Looks like the US carrier fleet is withdrawing from the Marianas now.

RE: Battle of the Marianas (Japs)

Post by EUBanana »

Still a high tempo of action... his stragglers are proving vulnerable to Japanese submarines, who prey on them with some effectiveness between the Marianas and Eniwetok. Judy divebombers from Truk manage to hit a few at the midpoint as well, though damage is lightish.

I detect a slackening of firepower coming out of his carriers which are still welded to the Marianas, though he does wander about a bit. Ammo low? The IJN is getting itchy feet. The near miss by Hake makes me think 'use em or lose em' as well.

The Kongo SAG is rearmed and ready to roll at Truk, I intend to sally forth again fairly soon when those LSTs are due at Eniwetok.

RE: Battle of the Marianas (Japs)

Post by EUBanana »

Well, ammo didn't appear to be a problem!

So frustrating with Yamato and Musashi as well - I knew when they wasted all their ammo on those destroyers that that fight with the replenishment TF was decisive, and decisively against the Japanese. Two Essex carriers within 16,000 yards of Yamato AND Musashi and they were out of ammo!

Bah.

RE: Battle of the Marianas (Japs)

(Comments cover two turn cycles.)

Using Night Hellcats for 100 ft. bombing? Huh?[:)]

Your subs are doing well. He doesn't seem to be employing his sub-killing DEs very well.

USS California, with 23 hits (the CDs are a killer), might be out of the battle if many were the big guns.

Shame about your CVs, but you hit his light carriers hard and cost him a lot of planes. Other than VPs the carrier encounters are a side-show. He's made serious miscalculations with LCU employment. He got one fort level on Saipan at the cost of huge disruption and significant actual squad destruction. He doesn't have recovery time to waste with half-hearted attacks. Those guys he has plunking around on Tinian ought to be on Saipan.

If you can sneak a few AKs into Saipan when his carriers leave you'll be in good shape most likely.

You got, probably, 2 AOs, and maybe two more, depending on how bad the fires are.

He has two precious AEs in at-sea TFs, when they can't do underway replenishment in 1944. He doesn't have a Marianas island to park them at yet. Why is he doing that? (Unless it's FOW that they're there?)

Despite the CV and CA carnage, you're in good shape. If you selectively Reserve your garrisons to let them rest, you should hold out on Saipan and Guam unless he redeploys more armor onto one or both.

How are the VPs doing?

I just finished my AI scenario (Historical difficulty.)

I was wrong: I got a Decisive vicotry (5172:2752) despite only taking one of the main island objectives (Saipan.) The difference was the 1500 VPs the AI lost in carrier losses alone. I had not thought they were worth so many VPs, and I had FOW on one large CV that was sunk unknown to me.

OTOH, the AI had substantial air resources it left unused on Iwo and Pelileu. A human player would manage these better.

I was also surprised at the scenario end-date. I won't tell you unless you want to know. I don't think Andy has said definitively anywhere.
