System lock ups

Post by Raskal67 »

Ok guys I am not trying to be a pain so I will review. The game keeps going into a complete lock up though the mouse pointer still works. I have a dell P4 1.9 with 5112 rdram. I have an NVIDIA 64mb Geforce 2 mx. I have downloaded the latest drivers for my card I have DX 8.1 installed. I have intermittent response from the graphical candy in the combat screens ( bomb splashes etc). I have reduced my sound drivers and graphical drivers to standard from full settings. I am running Win ME. The game is a blast and I have been playing it non stop for days now but I must say if the GAME was not as great as it is I would be getting close to tossing it. Please help I would appreciate any help. It locks up in the combat results screen every time. Thanks in advance!:p

Have you tried turning off the sounds altogether and see if that helps. I am going to pass on to Keith and see what he says.

I'm having the exact same problem. All drivers are updated, hardware acceleration off, etc. The really interesting thing is that I dual boot between Win98 and Win2k Pro. I've seen this in Win98 only.

Sys specs:

AMD 1.0Ghz T-Bird
NVidia TNT2
Avance Logic ALS4000 audio (generic sound card)
512MB SDRAM

It's all smooth sailing in Win2k, so I guess I just want to know for the sake of curiosity.

Fantastic game! Having a blast getting smacked around by the AI. :p

msconfig

Post by battlehammer »

you could try going into msconfig and dumping your startup. leave only systray and scanreg. also on the win.ini tab open the windows folder and remove the checks from load and run. see what happens. could be your anti-virus software interfering thats an outside shot. im running a similar system an hp pavilion 9995 but i have windows XP. what is the sound card you have in the system or is it intergrated?

Are you running a firewall like zonealarm? background programs could be it.

Don't think it's the sound

Post by Raskal67 »

Guys I am not running any firewalls and I am running norton anti virus updated. I do not think it is the sound. I am becoming convinced it is the graphics. I am seeing a lot of posts concerning the NVIDIA cards even with the most updated drivers. I get intermittent graphic representations in the combat resolution screens. Primary problem, I will be playing for an hour or so with out any bomb splashes or fighter muzzle flases in the combat resolution screen even though I have the animations set to on, then out of nowhere the animations will start. This can be good or bad. Most times at this point the game will lock up as soon as it gives the result on this particular combat.

System Lockups

Post by sailor »

I have the same problem. The system just locks up, although I can still move the mouse around. Further, the system locks up when I zoom in the screen. The game seems cool, although to be honest, I can't get far enough into it to tell.

For the record, I am running a PIII 550 (I know, I know, ancient), 256meg ram, Nvidia graphics, all drivers current, WIN 98.

Nvidia possibilities...

Post by Erik Rutins »

Frankly, I've gotten UV to run on my old Pentium 166Mhz Laptop with 128Mb of RAM. It's EXTREMELY slow, but it runs and works fine on the bizarre ancient laptop integrated graphics and sounds. It also works perfectly on various GeForce 2 systems I've tried it out on and I know Dave tested it on a GeForce 3. With all the various system and OS configurations, none of the testers reported anything like this so it's definitely being tough to track down.

Anyway, getting to the point... If some of you are intrepid souls, could you try several of the recent and not-so-recent Nvidia driver revisions to see if they make any difference for you? If this is a graphics/driver issue, perhaps we can track it down to a particular feature or revision series through this kind of info. Since we can't duplicate it here, we are relying on more info "from the field" at present.

Also, in terms of general advice for anyone experiencing problems:

Make sure you have plenty of swap space on your hard drive and that you've defragmented and run scandisk recently.

Try an uninstall/reinstall of UV.

Make sure you have the latest sound/graphics drivers and the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard. Try reinstalling them.

Make sure you are updated to DirectX 8.1.

Try disabling other programs running in the background.

Try disabling your sound device. Try re-enabling it.

If you have a system/registry checking utility like Norton Systemworks 2002, make sure you are free of any major problems in that area.

Try running your desktop at different resolutions and different color depths. Try running UV at both 800x600 and 1024x768.

As always, post any info you discover that may help and let us know if any of these resolve your problems. For those of you with zooming problems, are you problem-free if you avoid the zoom?

Regards,

I am also having lockups during the intro. If I hit click during the i can sometimes make it to the main menu screen, however it is not long after this that it locks up. I can still move the mouse cursor. I can not ALT-TAB or CTRL-ALT-DEL. I can only reset the power switch. I am running WIN98SE with a P4 1.8Ghz, 512MB SDRAM, SoundBlaster Audigy, and an ATI Raedeon 7500 AIW video card.

Never mind

Post by Raskal67 »

After about half hour of play today I had shut down my entire start up tray with the exception of my Delltouch programmable keyboard and the game locked up again. This happened at exactly the same spot as always. See above posts.

I get a problem very similar to that described by Sailor after about 45-60 mins of play. Mouse will move, but clicking on anything has no effect. Control-alt-delete does nothing either. The only way out for me is to re-boot.

For the record (I've not seen anyone else mention this), once the lockup happens, the music goes into a short loop, which continues even after the CD is removed.

Has happened twice when trying to save, otherwise no particular time or place.

May be partly due to my ancient system. Windows 95 4.0, 128 MB ram, NVIDA RIVA TNT 2, Pentium II about 500Mhz I think.

When it kept happening, I wondered whether there could be a memory leak somewhere. Has that been eliminated from the possible causes?

If you are running WIN98SE you may have to go BACK to DX8.0 or even earlier versions there are problems between pre-ME versions of Windows and Dx 8.1 and some drivers.

er ... I thought DX 8.1 (and some of those before it) were not uninstallable. Is it possible just to "go back"?

Re: LOCK UPS

Post by AP514 »

Hey
Well, I was doing well with no lockups. Then I loaded a Saved Game...Now Im locking up all over the place. The mouse is the only thing that moves. Can be in game for a few minutes to only a few seconds.
My System spects are....P-3 500Mhz, 512K, SoundBlaster live Value, Diamond Viper 770. Win 98.I do have zone alarm and Mcafee. In use 8.1 DX.
I have also noticed that the Menu screen is always open on my desktop and can not be Min or closed. If I go into the game w/out opening the manual first I can't go out of the game(Cntl-Tab)and click on the manual. As soon as I move the mouse over the open Menu screen (to try to open Manual)the pointer turns into the Hourglass. This might help w/ the earlier post about the CPU's running at 100% all of the time.
I really like this Game great Job and get them patches out soon :D

I will try to turn off and on sound and Firewall ........ect. I will keep you posted.

Progress report: having turned the music down to zero (is this actually turning it off?), had no problems with in-game freezes for about two and a half hours  this afternoon including a few saves until I tried to quit. Then the main menu froze. As before: mouse can move, but not click on anything, and ctrl-alt-delete has no effect, leaving rebooting as the only option.

I speculated above there might be a memory leak, but this suggests the problem is something else.

Interesting

Post by Raskal67 »

Well over the weekend I played in a different resolution and the lock-ups almost ceased. I played in 1024X whatever instead of 800x600 this resulted in only one lockup in 3 days. possible solution? What would cause all of this?

In all the months of testing of UV I only ever saw one crash to desk top. This was caused by me having the wrong version of the game at the time of testing.

My screen size is 1024 and never had a prob with that.

Same here

I just got the game today and haven't had time to run through everthing, but... I gots the same lock ups prob. as others. p3 500 dell, viper 770, 128ram, DX8.1a, SB live. I'm pretty anal about drivers so I'm sure I'm up to date on all or most. The lock is exactly like the one mentioned by previous posters, ie; mouse moves, alt-tab and Control-alt-delete don't respond, leaving reboot as only option. I must admit I'm at a loss. I don't think it's possible to reinstall earlier versions of DX, I hope this won't be nessesary, as other games I have are in need of it.
