hellcat draws first blood! He has killed a light tank (H-39L)!

The map has a lot of open ground, with groups of trees and rough terrain intermixed in a few spots. There are a coupla large orchards and fields, and two north-south ridges in the centerish area, devoid of any real cover. This is definately Tank Country!

An @ss whoopin' dedication for me? :) Thanks Goblin.
If you can avenge my loss as the Frogs then you shall have a shrine built to your honor! The armor isn't bad (except for the one round a turn crapola)...but the infantry was headache after the first round of firefights.
Hellcat is a valliant foe...our Winter Rage has see-sawed, with one of us pulling a rabbit out of our hats to get the upper hand...only to see it tarnished by losses on another sector. So this should be a good fight....a real joy to read up on! :)

Ps...Jess...if you're out there...tell Jenny she just lost one of those 152's that was rolling my way! :D

make that two more!

Goblin seems to be grouped mainly in the centre where he is moving in a very impressive looking 'central thrust' formation. (At least twenty tanks) This has allowed us to eat up some ground to the North of him, where I have suffered 3 or 4 breakdowns already! (which gives you an idea how fast we're moving) This was actually quite handy as it gave our recon units onboard a chance to get out and stretch their legs and we even spotted an ammo dump :D

Goblin's arty is already raining down on a central hill feature and my tanks are popping up and taking a few long range shots...

There appears to be at least 1 enemy tank in the South but that is very open ground indeed.

So... put your hands up and gimme that cheese now!

It appears that hellcat came loaded for bear (or heavy French tanks). I see 88's everwhere, plus PzIII's up the wazoo! Unfortunately, I tested the French with rarity on before we played, to see what the comp would have let me buy, and then I bought along similar lines! This gives me primarily light tanks, and Somua S35's. I did get alot of them, as hellcat is about to find out!

The fight is starting to rage by a big orchard on hellcats south 1/4. Burning German tanks now join my valiant patriots! If you had asked for anything else beside our cheese and wine, we could have talked! Now, I see that you are barbarians!

mein gott! There are french tanks everywhere! Not only a central thrust as initially thought. Here 3 companies (at least!) of armour are pushing into our centre where they have already overrun our forward positions and destroyed several tanks. My tanks!! Due to the orchard and the smoke this is all very much 'up close and personal'

My recon units in the North report what looks to be at least 2 platoons of heavy tanks trundling towards us.

In the South, what did I say? 'I see at least one tank?' well it now emerges to be at least two more armored companies cruising in either to the Centre fight or to push their own salient.

Most of my 88s (I only had a platoon) are already routed out and my tanks have plenty of targets. I am so happy I bought a company of Jpz1s! Our kill rate is at about 5 or 6 this turn but we'll need to up that for sure once my armour has vectored into position...

apart from those legion boys in the back I haven't seen any french infantry yet not that they bother me too much, I have enough tanks to worry about right now...

I see at least six 88's! I wish I had that many tank companies! I'm losing tanks at a furious rate, and wish I had bought ones with armor! An entire platoon of S35's ceased to exist, due to those Jpz1's. Move a hex, BOOM, gone. Next, move a hex, BOOM, gone. Repeat.

i got another section as reinforcements - yes they arrived already! thank god! my kill rate is going up to about 8 or so but we're bleeding tanks in the centre. We've spotted more heavy tanks trundling towards the centre where a little to the East we have taken the VHs and are hoping to get hull down on Goblins' ***! Some of my spec ops have engaged the legion boys and they are quite hardy folk it seems :(

The centre is still a furious tank battle, all at 3 hexes or less. I've managed to get some armour onto hilltops in the Centre and South at last and they've already scored some hits... Yet I can still see at least 40 tanks! My men are rushing about at top speed and at the end of this they'll either all be dead or they'll be very tired and atlking about 'what fun' today was... over some good wine, cheese and a baguette or two :)

thank God my arty is accurate!

I fought this turn to see if a miracle happened, and it did not. For those of you that still think quantity can beat quality, it can't. This is the second game where I have tried a 'wave' style attack with less expensive units, and both times it has miserably failed.

I was beaten in this game by hellcats superior planning! He purchased very intelligently, and I did not.

He's gonna play it and send it back, and I'll reach a decision.

I'm losing tanks at about 8 or 10 to 1.

I'll put you in the same cell as Orzel's commander when u surrender :D

The central thrust has been stopped dead. We have destroyed at least another 10 tanks including some of the heavies in the North. Most of my vehicles are running about at top speed to meet the French or taking hillside firing positions.

I did lose a pzivd though :(

we've loaded up a lot of cheese and wine so far :)

German spec ops have located the french AO and brought it under fire :)

well that's the French beat again so no vengeance for Orzel I'm afraid! I must admit that at first when I saw all those French tanks I thought 'Holy XXXX' and my centre was under immediate pressure and tanks were rushing to plug it. The orchard along with the valiant men in it and tanks also saved the day as my arty parks were immediately behind there. I got so worried that I vectored all my trucks to my arty parks ready to move out if the French broke through. Credit must also go to the 4 man recon teams with the anti-tank mines. I don't know how well they fared in Goblin's turns but in mine they would pull up in a kubelwagen or Stoewer 40, hit the tank and move back to cover. Excellent stuff! and cheap too! This was also the first game I've played where I actually saw my arty destroy tanks (ok light tanks).

Despite a decisive I still don't feel like I've beat Goblin yet... maybe this was just a blip or just the French... I will still have my vengeance but hey, at least I didn't get a slapping despite what the thread says...

I think the idea was we'd try the theory that their morale was set too low so we bumped it to 65 and also that a real armoured clash was something the French never really did achieve and things could have been different...

Although they weren't here I still think a French Force can win against the Germans and may well put my money where my mouth is soon on this one. Goblin chose a risky tactic of coming on strong and in force which really did threaten me and my positions. However, I was lucky enough to be able to call on enough armour within the vicinity. If I hadn't been able to do that my armour would have arrived after he had punched right through my centre AND one of my arty parks. I would then not have been able to mass my armour as I'd have lost maybe a 3rd of it and would still have needed to counter his forces in the Northen and Southern sectors.

Then he could also have stayed on the reverse slopes of the hills and in the trees (with his Legionaires) and played a defensive game. That may also have yielded a different outcome. In my battle with Orzel (at much smaller points) I was really deal't some hard blows and the French heavy tanks are very much to be feared. The only ones I took out in this battle were in direct infantry assault...

It was a risky tactic but one that could well have paid dividends.

The Frogs failed again?

Post by Orzel Bialy »

There's a shocker. :)
Hellcat...congratulations on your victory. Wow...a victory agains the Goblin-miester...there's one for your scrapbook!
Goblin, valliant effort on your part to try and restore honor to the Frogs of 1940....but I guess it wasn't to be.
The S-35's and the rest of the French tank park just aren't cut out for battle against 88's. Perhaps more Chars would have helped a bit...as I found their 75's to be fairly effective in muting those 88's...provided they survived the first hit. But that is all monday morning quarterbacking now. ;)
I salute you both!
