Port Units - What do do with them??

Post by ny59giants »

I've got a bunch of the Japanese "Port Unit" that just came in. They are nice as they have 80 Naval Support, 100 Support, and 24 Engineers. Where and for what do you use them??

I'd use them anywhere you want extra naval support.  Rearming those big guns or torps, loading resources or oil onto merchant ships, etc.

Resource and oil loading is not helped by naval support. Only troops, supply, and fuel.

Place them where your staging areas and reserves are located to speed up loading.

I use my allie duntids to speed the rapid takover of newly taken bases.. helps sasthe seabees get the ports up and running to unload the supplies and other EQ.. perhaps as the Jap player they would be useful in areas u load and unload freq from? no idea what that looks like for you.. good luck

Really ? Hmm I may need to rethink the location of one or two of these nice little units. Although the one at Miri will stay - it will at least help load the fuel from that small port (max size 3) onto ships for the trip to Saigon.

Oops, I stand corrected.  Naval support helps load cargo (resources and supply), not fuel and oil:

6.3.3.2.5 PORT LOAD RATE ADJUSTMENTS
Naval Support and Damage both affect a Port’s native ability to load a Task Force.
»» Naval Support. Naval Support may increase troop and cargo load
rates only. Naval Support increases the rate at which a given
ship can be loaded but cannot improve the total cargo handling
limitations of the port. Naval Support adds 10 points to the Troop
and Cargo load ability, for each Naval Support squad present.

Combine them with various Nav Gds (You will find witch by clicking unit oob).
You will get a powerfull BFs in return.

I find it the best way to use them.

Ahh good idea. I wonder if anyone has made a comprehensive list of all the units we can recombine into for the Japanese OOB ?

Actually, it's troops, supply and resources, according to the manual.

Your forward fleet bases are a good spot for them. IE Truk, Rabual, etc.

Question: Once you can combine the Nav Gd unit with the Port Unit to make a new "Special Base Force", what does the new OOB look like?

Just curious before I do this.

The standard "Special Base Force" doesn't have 48 organic SNLF squads like this new combined one would; is the TOE only 9, so the new "Special" force is overloaded? If so, I wouldn't combine, because that will effectively cost an infantry unit.

OR, is the new "Special Base Force" extra special compared to the standard, on the TOE?

Anyone know? I need to know how the Extra-Special base forces work

Here is the TOE for both the two units required to combine, and the resulting "Extra Special" Base Force. Note that the resulting unit is actually BETTER in certain ways (except for decreased Support), than its components. Aviation support is not shown, but its on the next page and has a TOE of 12 squads.

Component 1 - SNLF

Component 2 - Port Unit

Result - Special Base Force
