AG's how do you use them?

I use them as cargo ships; most places my small escorts are, the base is already big enough to take care of them.  I've got far more AG's than I need to support the small ships, so their best use AFAIK is to haul supplies.

The manual seem pretty vague about how to use them and being a total newbie to this game (discovered it and bought it two weeks ago) I have some difficulties understanding how they function. What type of ships do they tend (how do I know that, except for small ships... what is a small ship, is a light cruiser a small ship or a destroyer?).

Should they only go to a small ports or can they assist in lager ports as well and how much do they assist if at all in what port size. To me it is impossible to tell, at least so far. This game is so immense for a beginner that you are overwhelmed by all the details... but I love details... [:)]

I'm just now learning the game playing with the Guadalcanal scenario as the Japanese and I have converted some xAKL into AG and some into PB. Now what is the best use for them except as cargo ships that is?

Thanks for your answer but can you really confirm that the AG ship only tend to these "Small Warships/Escorts"?

The manual state that they may assist in repairing and tend to the need of any "small craft". By this I would assume any ship in the range of about 2000 tons and below or some such, which would include most PB,PC,E,DD,DE etc.. The biggest problem for me is that the manual are very vague and there is no way to know for sure which ship the AG actually help out with, which might lead you to station them in the wrong place completely.
