Mohawk or Hurri Trop IIb?

Post by Swayin »

Aykab, May 1942 - have an abundance of Mohawk airframes and was thinking of switching over one of my Hurri squadrons until the Spits arrive ... thoughts?

I'm not a fan of the Mohawk, if you can hang on a few more weeks you'll start getting the Hurri IIc. I'm using V squadron with the Mohawk, everyone elase gets the Hurris.

There are IICs arriving in small dribs and drabs ... just wondered what folks thought of the plane/plane comparison.

It's a warm body to fill up squadrons, if you are short of airframes, may be better off to use them as a stop-gap until you get more of the better frames. Also every squadron you swap will relieve the stress on Hurricane production and give you a chance to build those up, at which point you can switch back.

Mohawk 4 doesn't have armor, I keep them off the front lines and use them against unescorted raids or training if possible. If you use them over your own  base atleast you'll recover some of the downed pilots.

Yes, thinking of using them against the Bettys hitting Chittagong, mostly escorted by Oscars if at all...I like the Mohawk's maneuverability, but as noted, armor is lacking.

That's how I use them. I only put them on the front line in an emergency.

Use em! Shave that head. I'd use them mainly on sweeps / strikes where I dont expect enemy front line fighters and as a support CAP squadron on a major base.

I fill the squadron with as many pilots as I can and then put them on 100% training. As pilots get above 50exp, I feed them to the front. In might just be my imagination, but air strikes appear to be much better coordinated if all the pilots are 50 exp or better. Also, there are one or two Canadian squadrons you can buy out with Hurries. I send them to India/China. They do well if their exp is above 50.

IIB is better from my experience. Not a bad plane vs oscars and zeros. Mohawk is OK for CAP and training but I would rather save my pilots for better aircraft.

Bigger question is should you use Brewsters over Mohawks?

Very good question the allies must face early on. Neither will stand up in a non-ambush fight with a Zero. Fortunately, mission settings can mitigate head to head confrontations.

I definately prefer Brewester for range purposes. There are very few options for a mid-range allied fighter early on. I think this is their best mission type (barring that ambush we all love)

The Mohawk I kept for training pilots only, that lack of armor caused me to lose a good dozen or so 60exp pilots while I was testing its performance against Nates and Oscars, but one sweep from A2m's and I lost I believe 9 planes, so I pulled them out fast.

yeah if the Zero's 7.7mm can chop your plane in half, its time to get armor.

There is a very brief comment in Shore's Bloody Shambles (vol 2 I think), that some Brit pilots on Java preferred the Buffalo to the Hurricane. The logic went: the Brewster could not out climb or turn the Zero, but it could out dive it; the Hurricane could do none of the above. That being said, the Hurricane does very well in the game it seems.

As to Brewsters over Mohawks, well, as others have noted, the Brewsters range makes it the only option for escort missions past 200 NM. Mohawks are for training or low threat operations.

I've got 2 squadrons of Hurricane IIBs in Chittagong. One squad with over 320 kills and the other with over 290 kills. I've also raided the squadron
for the training command a time or two. Don't go against those two squads unless you've got F-16s or F-15s!!![:-]
