All the races I'm interested in playing with show to be very cautious and non aggressive.

There is a single page comment in the rules that the editor is very comprehensive and easy to use.

Now, that's the right answer. So the next question is HOW do you use it and save the changes? I have to change 3 races to something other than passive and cautious and a 1 page notice that the game comes with a great editor isn't helpful in the slightest.

There is only the variable settings for the galaxy each time. No preset scenarios at present? I've been in the startup sequence a couple of times and it seems to be the same with nothing preset. So if I want to make a scenario I have to write down the parameters for what I started with to do multiples of the same galaxy I want to start in?

Take a look at the "Quick Start" from the main menu for some preset galaxies.

Ok, thanks. Other than getting the race attributes I want for the races I need I think I can do the galaxy I want each time now but I'll certainly look and see what's available in the pre-made ones.

I have to change 3 races to something other than passive and cautious

To make races more aggressive you need to mod the races.txt. Create a new folder in the customization folder then copy over the races.txt (C:\Matrix Games\Distant Worlds\Customization\test theme\races.txt) Aggression is 6 across and Caution 7, change the numbers to anything over 100 for a more aggressive race. See below for example.

' - Name: name of the race
' - Picture index: index of picture used for this race from race pictures contained in Images\units\races\ folder or Customization\YourTheme\raceImages\ folder
' - Race Family: 0=Humanoid, 1=Ursidian, 2=Insectoid, 3=Reptilian, 4=Amphibian, 5=Rodent
' - Reproduction rate: base rate of population growth. This rate is also modified by other external factors
' - Intelligence: intelligence level (normal = 100). This factor influences research rate and smartness of interaction with other empires
' - Aggression: aggression level (normal = 100). This factor influences interaction with other empires, level of military ship building
' - Caution: caution level (normal = 100). This factor influences interaction with other empires, level of military ship building
