Squad Leader

Post by Steve Embelton »

Where have all the good strategic conversion games of board games gone. Why hasnt anybody looked at doing a real conversion of Squad Leader instead of all the junk fed to us of late that do not do this game real justice. By the way Clash of Steel, Carrier Command and High Command were and still are (if I can ever get the damm things to run on these newer machines) were real classic masterpieces. Come on Matrix lead the charge and give us what we want "Squad Leader". What does everyone else think??

A computer conversion of ASL, is likely to be a difficult one. The guys trying to do a computer version of World in Flames have been at it for years, but have nothing to show us.

The last thing I'd call CoS is a "masterpiece". This game had real problems. And neither one of them will work on my current machine.

That's what "Combat Leader" is supposed to be. A good, detailed simulation of tactical combat.

I've found [for me] that the best solution with all of my favourite DOS games is to partition my hard drive using Partition Magic and installing DOS 6.22 in it's own partition. I set up a logical drive and use a boot menu. Either operating system, Win 98 or DOS 6.22 can access the logical drive.
When I boot the machine and want to play a DOS game I can be at the command prompt within 30 seconds. I also use a shell interface from DOS 5, so I don't even have to type in command line entries to start the games. Goodbye to Win 98 messing up my DOS games!

there has already been a release of the Squad leaser game in computer form by the "TOY" company.
--clearly well stated if you know what i mean.

We already have an > then game than ASL2

it is called SPWAW (if you prefer something lighter then there is the arcade version of this game SPWW2)

the really great thing about WAW is that it comes greatly enhanced by CHLANDA offerings
a series of editers that are quite simply a boon to the scenario designer as everything can be edited in the units at the drop of a hat.

Now many gamers do not realize that many facets of SL and other games are contained in WAW and to boot there is no die rolling and
there is greater complexity allowed statistically as morale is not 7' or 8's etc and the armour values do not depend on die roll ranges!!!!!!!!

I can't say enough about the game.

If you are a player of either SPWAW or SPWW2 as I am ( i can no longer have the old drivers that make early SP games function and I will certinly not lose sleep over that with both of these fine games out) then you just know thaat ASL2 has been outdone ( however the freedom to create rules and such makes ASL2 much more versatile then the computer program games that cannot be adjusted so easily-perhaps some day though)

What Hasbro has done comes no where close to the real ASL from Avalon Hill. Hasbro is just plastering the name on "toy" games.

Don't discount ASL just because it uses die rolls. One can easily change it to use greater ranges in a computer version.

SPWAW is good, but so is ASL.

It is not meant to be a computer game; ASL 2.

The game was developed with the limitations of paper game demands, attention to detail requirements and many other seriously limiting factors.
It is for this reason that there is generally a one shot system in the game.
The heavy cumbrance of solving for multiple shots for the human is pretty devastatingly boring (any one for risk?)
Add to this the need for programmed learning
and you arrive at the situation that it is not possible to make an ASL2 without coming up with another SP1 SP2 SP3 SPWW2 SPWAW SPModernWarfare.

If ya wants a computer game that is 3 parts word processor and one part game mechanics then yes you will eventually arrive at preprogrammed SL_ASL2: pay for version such and so and now pay for version here and there ... of course no each part works within it's range and is not an across the board (forgive me: across the screen) game system ...

I don't see how anyone is going to get their wish come true if the beauty of the game - being able to address the rules and vary their content and their expression while maintaining the extremely simpified grammer of real life units in a very limited set of values ... know as unit counters ... if the game that is created for the computer has to be butchered into a very defined and constraining set of rules and settings to make it function as a computer program should (that it be bootable and work within established parameters) and that would instantly eliminate the differing points of view and rules and play styles for the same results.

I won't say to you that you should just accept one of the other games.
I don't need to.
SL-ASL2 has it's format and it's place much like the Steel Panthers games I can no longer run on current Windows products and no amount of updating the game or anything will produce in today's programming world the exact or near as we can make it identical clone for the electrical battlefield ...

Amen SL-ASL 2 live on. but only where it should, on the cardboard and in the rules and in the eyes of the players.

Where it will not survive and remain itself is the electric screen.

Looking for work : old rules warrior with an oratory tongue for defining that last point aht wins over many an opp that was prepared to strangle you at the last die roll.

Personally I kind of like my new job across the e-highway where i can play a turn and go for a bike ride and not have to tell what is really on the mind nor even have a rules lawyer present and accounted for before beginning play in a scen.

Of couse this is you too or you would not be here but would instead be deriding the infedels who don't read their rules and waste their precious eysight on the comp screen monitor!
