When you have a selected a ship, to have the ability to click on the bottom right (at the bottom left screen) of the info screen will set it to automatic mode.

FYI, the A key does that already (but in only one direction).

I agree, a greyed out 'automation button' one could click on to automate/de-automate would be great.

FYI, the S key stops the ships current action and turns off automation. You could also just give it a move order somewhere and it will turn off automation and fly there.
