AE time commitment

Post by Rankorian »

So, I am going to start scenario 1. I make some calculations on the amount of time it will take out of my life if it goes to 1945....hmmmm.

What would be your own calculation--assuming you are WITP-AE veterans (unlike me), and playing the AI?:

Total hours of your life, and over what likely RL time period.

(Granted, I will then be, if playing Japan, be in that esteemed, select, group that can chat exhaustively about Japanese aircraft engines at any classy cocktail party)

And, separate question, how many people in the world, do you imagine, could start a sentence with "In my last 10 complete campaign games of AE, ........."?

I don't look at playing the game as taking time out of my life, it just adds to my enjoyment of life. And thats without belonging to any select, esteemed group myself. [;)]

Its not that bad. I'm in a PBEM and we're at May 1945. Been playing since September. You'll have plenty of time for a life.

Rankorian,

Well, each turn will takes me an average total time of 60 minutes between the replay, planning and plotting. Sometimes more and a little bit of the time less. I get in at least 10 rounds per week (one day turns). My AE games will take about 2 years to complete should we play to the end.

And since AE is less than a year old, I certainly cant say I have played to the end even once in PBEM, let alone 10. I estimate my first 1000 turn game will take ~1500 hours to complete - so 10 games (assuming I get better at it) would be 10,000 hours. If I played 10 hours a day, every day of the year, it would take about 2.75 years to complete such a 10 game feat using 1 day turns. Since I work, am married, and have kids at home, that can't happen.

So, even for a developer of the game, it must be a little intimidating designing something that can be only completely tested so few times.   So many people may just do the first 6 months?  But one wants to be faithful to those who get to 44-45?

You must have the proper priorities; they are as follows:
WITP AE
Ski/Golf (Depending on season)
Fishing
Work
Other unimportant things.
Appear at places to which he must hasten; move swiftly where he does not expect you.

It took me 6 months of continous play to finish the game against the AI with 1 day turns to finish the game. I normally average 3-4 turns daily and spend 10 mins per turn.

Termi I think this is fun

1, Don't play the AI.
2. Play a human and expect ca 2 hrs pr day.
3. Good Luck.

Ok, I have installed the Tracker....at least up until the "Regions" thing--which I hope is simpler to set than it looks.

Have to go out and do some Life.

But getting closer, closer to launch.

[Can't imagine 10 minute turns]

Already, I think my knowledge of WWII in the Pacific, and even about the Pacific itself, seems to have about tripled in this process.  And a GC, Japan, looks like a PEAK GAMERS EXPERIENCE--at least for WWII types (at least while waiting for a CM2 equivalent to CMBB, which may be never, or a definative HOI3/4/etc Barbarosa experience.)

You can squeeze it in. A good way to play for me is that I usually spend 10-15 minutes a turn, but every few turns I'll spend an hour or so on all the "housekeeping" you don't need to do EVERY turn; pilot management, checking convoys, organizing new convoys, sending subs out on patrol, checking all the subs, etc. etc.

If some has time constraints they would be better off playing the AI then heading into a PBEM. Main reason I don't play PBEM anymore due to overwhelming time invested in it, being available for 2 hours a day is not always possible to everyone, especially when I go fishing for 2 days a week and don't even bring my laptop.

PBEM is the stuff. You will go as fast as you go. Put what time you can into it. You likely are going restart at least once before taking one to the end.

I've tried PBEM, and found I simply cannot commit to 1-2 hours most every day. It's not fair to my opponents who do have the time. Thus I play the AI ...

I am encouraged by the responses.  I can see putting in hours and hours initially: understanding the planes, mechanics, where all my units are, the economy,...but at some point mostly I will be dealing with the "tip of the sword" (either giving or receiving), and a lot of the rest will be routine.

It is just hard coming off Panthers and Shermans, to....Oscars and Betties?....and no one had ever asked me to pick engines for my half-tracks.
