Stalingrad, the Movie
I was watching Stalingrad for the first time in a while and had forgotten how much I love this movie. My favorite part out of the whole film is the very beginning where the LT's men are taking care of him at the beach. I always thought that was so cool. [&o]

I never thought much of this one. Even my girlfriend spotted some of the factual errors.

I loved the movie...but the dubbing did my nut in. I would have much rather had an undubbed, subtitled edition.
Favourite bit? I thought the ending was very, very telling of the campaign.

Yea I agree with the above two posters. The movie was pretty good it just had awful dubbing. Same with Das Boot.

Stalingrad is my #1 WW2 movie, I watch it with subtitles... like it's meant to be. I don't like movies like Enemy At the Gates where you have British actors playing Russian and American actors playing Germans...I mean common. Then I like letters from Iwo Jima, The Thin Red Line and Das Boot just to name few.
RE: Stalingrad, the Movie
Just to be sure, this WAS the same Stalingrad movie where throwing a cocktail against a T-34 caused it to burst into flames half a second later correct?

I think so. Even with that, however, it is still leaps and bounds better than Enemy at the Gates.

Hmmm...I don't remember this scene...I know there is a scene with German Pak knocking off some T-34s but I don't remember the Molotov cocktail. Wouldn't that be Iron Cross movie ?
RE: Stalingrad, the Movie
Thin Red Line is prob my favourite war film.

Liked Thin Red Line a lot except for some casting decisions. Clooney and Penn acted liked they needed the paycheck. Travolta and Nolte were horribly miscast imo.
BTW, Matto, do you remember any particular scene that you were in?

No, I'm sure it was this one. During a winter scene with a few tanks attacking. Actually, I thought some of the Russian's may have acted pretty dumb too. Now maybe life was more cheap in a communist environment, but I don't see how much things can change between them and lets say, the average American attacking Jap infested islands.
I've seen enough real footage to note that even the US vets would just cower like chickens behind any tank they could find.

This is the one where the scene after the pak vs. T34 scene they remove the commanders boot and you get a good look at his foot ! ACK !.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

Oh gosh, haha. I remember that scene, unfortunately. The movie definitely didn't have a happy ending, but neither did the actual Battle of Stalingrad (for the Germans, at least).

I have seen the Thin Red Line I think a few times. I saw it again the other day and it was like I have never seen it before. Great movie!
I have seen Das Boot and Stalingrad a few times and always with subtitles. Dubbed would not work for me!

Stalingrad is a german film....maybe your thinking of Enemy at the Gates....that is dire.
My second favourite war film is also German.....The Downfall....what a film....Bruno is superb as Hitler. The man who played Goebbles was damn scary looking...a little to tall aswell..
My third favourite is The Iron Cross...first war film I ever saw that portrayed the Germans.
Finally next on my list is that war film that even people who aren't interested in warfare love Apocolaypse Now....I prefer the directors cut.
An overlooked gem is When Trumpets Fade.
RE: Stalingrad, the Movie
For Das Boot, it needs to be in German, with subs for the non-speakers and needs to be the proper 4 hour verison not the cut down US market movie-verison.
Stalingrad is ok, not my favorite film..I like the Finnish/Russian conflict films better...and the Movie, Attack and Retreat which is about the Italians on the Eastern front with Peter Falk(Colombo), who does much better in it than he did in Anzio

Downfall (Der Untergang) is my absolute favorite movie. Incredibly accurate and Bruno Ganz plays an amazing Hitler.
